ok im planing a sas swap on my terrano and i was wondering if anyone on here knowes if a hilux gear box will adapt to td27 easily. or if there are any other good strong gearboxs i could use that will adapt reasonably easy.
i am waiting to go with the drivers side drop so i wont have to cut and flip the patrol diff i already have.
any help will be greatly apreciated as im only a youngin and dont know much. cheers

Wouldn't have thought that a Hilux gearbox would be any stronger than the factory Nissan one (Toyota couldn't put the Hilux gearbox behind anything to powerful without it breaking even the 3.0 turbo diesel in surfs had an uprated gearbox over a Hilux).

any thing can be done. it just comes down to
time to do it
cost to do it
skills to do it
motivation to do it
the patrol gearbox has been put in a terrano before, im sure there's heaps of options

a patrol auto and a terrano auto are very very similar in the centre section. Pretty sure the pump and bell housing off the terrano auto will go onto the patrol one.

Toyota box should be easy enough to adapt, if you've got mechanical/engineering ability.
Toyotas have removeable bellhousing which makes it easier to make another. Also would need a custom clutch with toyota plate and release bearing/fork, and nissan pressure plate.
Good luck and keep us informed and pictures are great :-)

stay auto nissan safari/patrol , v6 terranno/300z/TB 42&TD42 ,VH v8series trans are all the *same same *but a little different  ,easier interchange, bellhousings etc
but your patrol diff will be approx 100mm wider in the wheel track something to also think about ?

thanks for all the info guys.
i am going to try keep it manual so i may look further into the surf gearbox. i was also thinking maybe cut and flip diff and get the biger stronger terranoll gear box and shorten the diff a little while im at it. but then agian if i ever break anything replacement parts will be much harder to come by so not as ideal as surf box. still all ideas at the mo.
cheers

as has been said, anything is possible, time skills, money.
however you said your self your a newbie and the surf box may be biting of more than you can chew and after playing this game for long enough you learn things are never as simple as they look. also staying breed to breed is more often easier as things tend to be designed similar and therefore match up easier whereas toyota to nissan may be way different in every way making things that much harder and sometimes impossible. Also if no one else is known to of done it then there may be a good reason. stick to what others have proven to work untill you perhaps have a bit/a lot more experience. that said wonderfull things have been done by those thinking outside of the box.

just a thought, but have you tried flipping ya transfer case ? do ya need a stronger gearbox ? sure the terrano gearbox is a known weaker link along with the steering. but its not like they pop each week.

I take it you got lots of money too throw around then if you plan to pay someone else to do such time consuming things. :P
seriously tho go talk to the 4wd guy and after ya pick ya self up off the floor when you talk dollars on his guesstimation. you will learn another lesson. If it aint broke dont fix it. :D :D :D

just a thought with toyota box idea- check how far gear sticks sit back from front of gearbox.
If different length to nissan box then would need to alter transmission hole and trims inside. Easy enough if you don't mind it rough, but to get a factory look inside would take yet more patience

being a aprentice i dont have lots of money no. but however i can save my money :D. so i will pay some one to do it as i dont have the skills to do it but i will do what i can to make it cheeper.
i think a stronger gearbox is needed as im on my 2nd box now.
and the reason why im going to do this is is because i keep spending money on the rat sh#t front end. so spend money to save money in the long run.

If you are trashing that much gear on the terrano sell it and by a patrol, or a underpowered lux.
