Fj40 Disc brake conversions- Certification (?)

Hi Guys,

Recently purchased a '78 FJ40, with Drums all round. My intention is that the truck will be a semi-daliy driver/trip rig. Nothing to major offroad etc.

Ive got the front disc brake setup from a later 40 (1981) (everything from shafts out) and my intention i to swap this gear over in the standard manner. Ive done HEAPS of research (iH8MUD, Pirate, this site) and his seems like the best way to go. My question is will this need Certification? I'm assuming it will. What's the procedure for this? does the cert guy need to see the vechile before and after?

Im also interested in swapping the rears to disc brakes (semi-floater axle) as it failed its last WOF on the left rear not working. Ive put new cylinders, shoes in and they're a bastard to work on so i was planning to swap to rear disc, potentially using a kit like these:

Would something like that meet cert standards? Or is there an easier option without swapping to a full float rear.

cert will be required, front is easy, swop bits over, they will all bolt on ok, you may need to alter brake lines, rear disks will require cert, basically if it is a complete bolt together conversion ( no welding) then cert is striaght forward.
you will get to under go a braking test, 100ks to 0ks, in X secs, 3 times in under 2 mins, they will be looking for brake fade, if they suspect fade they do another couple of times to really cook the brakes for ya, they looking for pulling, brake bias, and of course stopping power, is a test that is hell on your brakes,

cheers, whats the general process for certs? Can i do all the work then get it certed or does the cert geezer need to have a squiz before i do any work?

without wanting to sound like I'm telling you to do anything dodgy, if you swapped over your front drums to some discs off a later model cruiser (60, 70 series) its all bolt up factory stuff, it would work fine so long as you've got the right master cylinder and any wof guy would probably be unlikely to know the difference, its technically modified but its all cruiser bolt on stuff. Some 40 series cruisers came out with factory front discs anyway but not on the NZ market.

As far as rear discs go its probably wiser to use some callipers of a localy available NZ vehicle rather than a vehicle from the other side of the world, your truck should still have the carden handbrake on the back of the gearbox so the world is your oyster when it comes to chosing a calliper :mrgreen:

Did a quick search and the mr2 caliper conversion seems choice, do these brackets fit semi-float axles?

Anyone know of a bracket availible here or a template?

can anyone tell me conclusivley if the SNR bracket, 70 series rotor and mr2 caliper combo will fit my semi-floater rear?

Or if snr bracket will fit my semi floater and i can use another combo?

If you have a semi floating rear end then use a caliper that is on two rail pins.ie; single piston type.
Play or end float on the axles will cause problems, by pushing the pistons back into the caliper body, and when you brake , the pedel will go to the floor to push the pistons out.
