What the heck is this for?

Goes up under my steering wheel and pulls in when I push the button on my gear lever in.

On an automatic, you can't pull keys out unless you are in Park. Also you can't restart engine unless in Park or Neutral. This would be the cable that tells ignition switch which position your shifter is in.

Actually, if its that little button you are talking about. It might that you can't press it and get out of Park without pressing on the brake. I can try and have a look on mine later in the day.
Do you have the Factory Service Manual. It should have a photo as well.

I can remove the keys if its running or not. But I still have to press the brake to move the shifter - if thats the case, I'm not going to reinstall it as I love leaving it running and being able to take the keys out

Well, you can take the keys out while its still running is because your keys and switch are well worn

its not because of this cable being disconnected.
