Post by spanky »

after a long run with my vitara and a swb bighorn ive seen the light and got a jeep, picked it up today, is a 96 cherokee sport.standard apart from extractors and exhaust, put some 1/3 worn 31s on and took the sway bar off, will try it like that this weekend and go from there.

6 months ago I did the same thing.
Sold my beloved terrano and got a 99 Wrangler.

comments.
Not nearly as comfortable to drive (but you got a cherokee, and I got a soft top)
She's a drinker
She goes anywhere, stock for now, but big (ish) plans
The great thing is the vast selection of upgrade options.

All in all, the more I drive her, the more I know I made the right choice.

Plus I'm starting to get the whole "its a Jeep thing"

Wife says... This year is a "Jeep year"
And she's even loving it... And best of all, all so talking upgrades.

mine is not road legal so its mods will be purely to get abit better off road, cracked screen and a missing door handle and the last owners let it die in the rego, only had it for a day and already like its low down grunt and instant throttle response, all my 4wding is within 1-10ks from home so fuel use shouldnt be too bad, seems to idle around pretty good, first thing to do will be trim the guaurds and probaly lock the rear diff, already has onboard air, bars on the sills and a extra skid plate under the trans, so far a good jeep for under a grand and now i have 2 mopars.now that we are getting the first bit of rain for a month i will have some mud to go play in and next weekend take some marshalls into the 42 traverse for the t42 endurance race( mountain bikes and runners ).hopefully some pics and video after the weekend, mrspankynz1 on you tube,

Mines the same! I dont begrudge the fact that it cant go past a servo because:

A. Its a Jeep
B. Big lazy instantly powerful motor
C. Its a jeep
D. Theres a HUGE aftermarket and home made upgrade path for them
E. Did I mention......yeah... ITS A JEEP!

YEP I love my jeep, good luck with yours

Now had the jeep for some time and now my next step is change the axles, still havnt broken a diff but only running 31s or 33s. Got a pair of 60series landcruiser axles both with factory diff locks,4.1 ratio, will need to swap diff head across on the front axle but then I have decent axles that should last and let me go to 35s,apart from the cps shitting out it has been sweet. Put a bigger trans cooler on and a bonnet vent with a fan and it doesn't get hot .cut the tailgate so only the window lifts .

Cool

1996 was the year they switched over to the much better 5-297 U-joints and one piece axleshaft.

Direct swap into previous years Cherokee and would make a good strength upgrade for someone when you do the Toyota axle swap.

It was for the vacuum operated CAD disconnect system.
The Jeep Dana 30 was a live spindle design with no locking hubs.
I think they dropped the CAD system for the Cherokee in around 1991
