Replacing 80's handbrake shoes.

Post by petefj40 »

What a farking mission.
The biggest annoying thing in the job? The smallest springs holding the shoes to the backing plate. Like Andy said last night at the club meeting. You need Asian fingers to nail the job easily. (pitty you said that when you were sitting right next to an Asian dude at the time Andy  )
Yesterday i took em out and went down to Repco to buy replacements. They quoted me $192.00 for the set. But they didn't have any and said it would be ex Aucks. So I threw them back together (with some difficulty).
Today I poped into BNT and asked how much for a set. $79 bucks! And that wasn't even a trade price (thanks gotflex).
Took em out again and threw in the new set. STOKED!!

Pays to shop around, and to have Asian fingers.

I had cable to the rear calipars on the FJ40. (MR2 calipers) I couldn't even hold the the boat on the boat ramp with em. They were farken useless (apart from getting wof). At least the 80's held the boat fully loaded on the ramp, even when the pads were low.

If you've got a set of nose pointed vice grips, that makes the job a lot easier.

Take the drums off n check Bill. Would take you 10mins a side.
A 17mm socket gets the calipers off then adjust the star wheel back (between the shoes) n then pull the drum off.
