thinking about buying one they look nice with a bit of lift and some 33s, what are the 300tdi like engine wise would much prefer diesel manual but may swing to a auto petrol, what is the fuel economy like between the to.
looking for a post 1993 and nothing newer than 2000 (with all those electrics yuck hahahah ) had toyotas and i just think they are over priced for what they are, i realy like that the disco's are solid axle and coil just not that they are full time 4wd

I am currently running a 300tdi Discovery manual gearbox and returning over 30mpg commuting across the city and beyond to work (around 150km's per day return) getting 850 to 900kms to the tank.
Stock standard though so with 33's you will be working it a bit harder so will get a bit less.
The 300tdi didn't appear until the facelifted models in 1994 and went through to early 1999. Most are auto's though and you don't see many manuals on the market. Jap imports are all autos.
Having said that the auto would probably handle the larger tyres better, performance wise. A good 300tdi properly maintained is good for 400-500K. Just do the cambelt every 60,000k's
Lots of V8's around, again autos and due to the numbers are fairly reasonably priced compared to the diesels. What you save on purchase price and maintenance, you will spend on fuel. around the 450km's to the tank with 500 plus on a good easy trip.
For either vehicle check for rust around the apline windows and inside the boot door area. ABS light problems are generally easily fixed. All roof linings will be sagged but replacement is only $450 so build that into purchase price negotiations.
To fit 33's you will need to trim wheel arches and fit a minimum of 50mm lift. A Discovery on 32's will have as much clearance under the diffs as a Toyota or Nissan on 35's

Parts are not expensive or that scarce. Plently of aftermarket suppliers around to keep prices competitive. Actually at times prices are cheaper than some Nissan and Toyota parts.
Plently of 300tdi around but are a very popular vehicle and people tend to hang on to them longer. Most are autos though (all Japanese imports were autos) so manuals are generally NZ new and more difficult to find.
Be prepared to pay $5000-$7,000 plus for a good tidy 300tdi manual.
I like mine so much I would want top dollar to consider parting with it and that would go for most other owners.

There may be one coming up for sale in Wellington shortly.
Try giving Taz01 a shout in a few weeks time.
He should be getting pist off with the teasing and pushing his around (because it wont start, stop, idle, turn corners, climb or descend hills by then.
