80 series to LJ70/78

Hey,

I've currently got a 91 80 series which Ive had for around five years, I love it, but is so massive and I don't have any kids or need for lots of space, it's pretty much standard but when I have been offroad it's been very capable (it's got factory front and rear diff locks) it's auto and ever since Ive had it I've wanted to convert to manual, but it is hard to find a manual gearbox for it.

What are the LJ78s like? They seem a bit smaller yet still solid axle. I'm keen to do more off road, how does the 80 series compare to the 78 offroad?

I've driven an auto IFS prado with the 1kzte which seems to have a bit more get up and go than the 1hdt.

Any feed back, advice would be much apreciated.

Cheers

Dave

I have a LWB KZJ78...
Being boxier and a bit narrower in wheel base it tends to smack its rear a bit...
I think a fully tricked out 80 would be sweet...
Would pay to take one for a drive...I think it would be a step down to what you have...

You oviously havent tuned the 1hdt to its potential yet if you found the prado exciting. 80 series are very detuned from factory. Plenty of info on here to transform the performance of the 80. Id stick with the 80. Just my two cents.

The intercooled 90 prados go heaps better than the earlier 70 series non intercooled ones, but the earlier beam axle ones are better offroad ... take one for a spin ... if the 80 you have is good maybe stick with this ...

stay with the 80
sort the motor out properly
chop the body off behind the B pillar and turn it into a truck cab
decant bull bars and side bars
chop the gaurds to fit the 36 simys ( only the front now cause the rear has been already sorted)
big air intake and a even bigger exhaust
WEAPON SORTED

oh thats what i did to my 60 anyway

there you go game plan is on 8)

That sounds ideal, and will probably happen some time down the track as I've always love an 80s ute.

Thanks for the replies, think I'll stick with the 80,

Does anyone know of a good exhaust outfit in Dunedin for 3"?

Cheers

Dave

There not that hard to find you just have to ask the rite people, the problem is the cost of the full manual conversions. :D

Looks ideal, but looking at the price might be better to sell my auto vehicle and try find a manual.

Does anyone know if the 70 series box and transfer bolt into a 80? I'm guessing you would need to swap over to the manual locking hubs?

Cheers Dave
