Terrano factory recovery hooks ok?

Hi All,
I have the single factory recovery hook on one side of my '95 Terrano, and was thinking of fitting the same on the other side.
They look pretty substantial, and appear forged, not cast.
Are they up to the job of using a snatch strap on?
Maybe some new HT bolts for good measure?

Cheers

In my opinion, no. They are made/produced by the manufacturer but they have no safety ratings marked on them; and they can snap under load. I would only use them as a highway towing point.
Rated hooks are the safest option as these are designed to straighten out and not break under extreme loadings, the bolts on the rated hooks are high tensile too. It takes a small bit of modifying to fit rated hooks to a Terrano but it is not a major issue to do so.
I have a photo buried in my PC somewhere, I will try to dig it out, or it could be in one of the many posts I have made on here; have a wee search

Hello

Could it be this hook you are referring too?

Some of the pics have gone from the other links, but it has been reported that these 'big' hooks snap and become dangerous missiles. You want a hook that will bend and let go of the recovery strap.

I'll be fitting my rated hooks soon, so keep an eye out for the best mounting option. The boys and girls here will probably share their ideas.

Do some reading of these forums and you'll find that many people here would refuse to tow you out without proper club approved tow hooks.
Basically the factory hook has no rating, so anyones guess at when, and what part will let go.
Hook, bolts, or captive nuts in chassis?
I personally believe the hook is the stronger of the 3.
I have done as you suggest doing yourself- fitting another to the other side. (makes acess easier in some circumstances).
Do bear in mind that I never get hugely bogged, and so never need a massive snatch out.
Still would have massive loading on hook/bolts/chassis, just far lower than I imagine many people on these forums would regularly encounter.

OK, thanks guys.
Nothing nice about having a tow hook through the back off the head.
I'll sort out some rated hooks.
Suggestions for places with sharp prices on these in Auckland?
