1994 2.8 TD Pajero starter motor problems

Recently, my Mum's pajero started just clicking when we went to start it, so obviously it's a starter motor related problem.
But what could likely be the reason for it?
We're thinking it may be something to do with the starter solonoid, but with limited space it's hard to inspect it and find what the problem is.
So has anyone had any similar issues? Or suggestions as to what to check/how to check it?
Cheers.

Did you replace both batteries last winter when you were having problems?
If the batteries are good then it may be a lead or earth. Generally, clicking shows signs of poor connections or battery performance.
Cheers,

Nope, haven't replaced the batteries.
Lincoln apparently checked the batteries before, but I'll take a look and see if I can clean the connections up a bit

What happened to good old DIY?
I'll probably just go through the basics first, then get round to checking the more complicated stuff.
But I'm still open to more suggestions...

ok, to add further details to this. It has been turning over much slower than it should for the last few months. Which makes me think that its the brushes that are worn? or the batteries.
Now when its clicking a bit of hitting of the solenoid will get it started again. So I would say that has packed up too?
Also what is the ebst way to get to the starter to get it out?
I ams ure it will be a bitch of a job, just like anything on a pajero

ended up taking it o an auto lece, was $500 odd dollars later and now we have a mint starter motor now. Turned out all the brushes had worn out completely and the solenoid was gone and something else, so a recon'd starter at $400 and labour. So its all good now.

i know this is the wrong model but they can typically order anything you want.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/mitsubishi/electrics/auction-477497025.htmFor 300 for a new out of the box starter and a couple of bolts to put it on yourself its worth using them.
