Safari electrical problems

Post by DaveM »

I have just replaced the batteries in the Safari after having starting problems over the last 2-3weeks.
Found every now and then the batteries would discharge overnight, but was only occasional.

Problem is worse now, so threw new batteries in, and same problem this morning, except instead of having 12v (instead of 24), it had zero.

Any tips/advice on how I go about trying to find the cause of the draining?

Cheers,
Dave

Pretty sure it has something to do with the memory feed on your radio, Mudbums uncle had the same problem with his safari-fitted new batteries, reconditioned alternator but still discharged. May have something to do with the inverter 24-12 volts having to change current for the memory even when sitting? Would be worth mentioning to an autosparkie, see what they say. He ended up putting his radio on a separate switch (or disconnect the memory wire and see what happens)-only hassle with this is you have no radio memory. It worked though

Disconnect one of the batt terminals and place a ammeter between the batt and the terminal.

This will tell you how many amps are being drawn with everything turned off, then just go around disconnecting all accesories untill you find the culprit. :D

There should only be about 0.1amps being drawn with everything off.

I had a problem like that with mine a few months ago, glow plug timer had shit it self and was glowing all the time(note:glow plug light well still go out like normal but still powered up glow plugs)alternator could just keep up as long as no elect were being used, radio, lights etc.replaced glow plugs and wired up manual switch with buzzer so if relay jammes on the buzzer well continu to sound.

Its easy to test just check voltage to glow plug rail and make sure it stops after 6-10 sec's.

Thats if its a diesel of cause :D

Hey Dave, solution is simple, sell the safari and buy a Land Rover

So when are ya comming back down to the coast for a play again, we're only round for another 2 months or so before we're off to Canada, so should get out sometime before that.

Canada :?:
Is this a permanent move, or holiday?

I'm keen to get out again, any time from 10th September on as I've got my last block course for work coming up, so if you have any plans, let me know.
Will have to make sure I don't follow you into any bogs next time  , and I'll have to buy some 35's

Be good to catch up again

Hey Dave,

Canada = holiday, well kinda. We're heading over early Nov, justy gonna be ski bums for 6 months, we've got work visas now so we can work for a year after that and see how it goes. Might have to do some thing really sick and drive a Jeep or something like that over there, NAS 90's are way to expenceive for me to think about. Anyway we should organise a trip sometime, definitely get some 35's, we should head up MT Greenland or something, I had to winch Chris up last time we went up there, so it's always a bit of a laugh, that was when he only had 31's though.
