Post by Sal »

Hi !

I'm a new user and I've noticed several questions and answers re diesel leak on Terrano. Can anyone pls advise approx how many labour hours I should expect to be charged for to have this repaired? ...Am female...trying to work out how much it's likely to cost me !!!
Thanks for your help !

Two at the most if it just the seals and the pump comes apart easy enough for them

make sure you get a price to fix the seals only , most shops will send the pump off and have it reconditioned (1000$) including removing/fitting-
1400 if your a girl [:
the pump is simillar to the safari one but with a bit more gear on top
where abouts are you located, some of the guys here might have some local knowlege

i did mine in about 90min (including coffee break)
talk to a few mechanics and state you" dont want the pump rebuilt - only the top seals replaced" and see what sort of responce you get .
dont take any crap about not bring able to get the seals either, i picked them up from a pump reconditioning place at 20$ and that was retail price.
the seals should be able be done with the pump in place.

on rare occasions the front seal could need replacing - mainly through scare moungering from mechanics then forcing you to pay the labour to have the pump removed and in turn while its out you may as well rebuild it.
if you front seal needs replacing you will know but the oil level on the dip-stick increasing (from diesel getting into the oil galleries through the front seal)

they might have had to remove the pump , and knowing that you paid 800, id expect they would have done the whole pump up. either that or they have done a few filters, oil, re-tuned the pump and perhaps serviced the injectors.. what does the bill state.. and more importantly , what does the pump look like now?

Heh, on my old Terrano, i paid $700 to have the rockers resurfaced and set, new injectors, the EGR removed properly, the pump seals done and the injector pump timing checked and advanced a little.

$750 is about what i got quoted to get the injector pump on the safari reconditioned. That was with them removing it and installing it.

TD42 and the TD27 are basically the same motors, so my guess would be they have recond the pump............
