hey there, just would like to pik a few brains out there, just brought this surf, dont no alot about ifs, use to solid fronts, i want to run my 33 12.5 tyres, on 15x10 rims with a -44 offset rim, what sort of lift and i going to need to do to achieve this, thanks

2" body lift , slight tweek of the front torsions , and BFH to the firewall seams behind the wheels.

I put a 2inch lift in mine and a 1inch bodylift, remember body lifts are ment to have cert so u could always go 3inch dobinson lift springs and grab some new tosion bars and treak them bit, bit harder or wof man to notice it more than 2inch lift

I hope it is ok if I jump on here, I have the same smurf and I am going to do the same to mine soon. tell me more about those 3in dobinson lift springs please...

and how does the whole certification works ? do I have to drive to a certain place so a certifier can have a look at my truck and tell me what is wrong and what I have to change (or can I go online and just pay a 'cert fee' ? - I mean in the end it is anyway just about the money, right ?)

I just went into mag n turb and asked for some 3inch lift springs for a surf, we did this set up in a mates truck with some raw shocks then he brought old man emu torsion bars and raw front shocks and set the torsion bars close enough to hold it at 3inch in front, then the only way you can get asked for a cert plate is if the guy realllllllllly know his shit and has a tape measure.

You need cert for any body lift , you can get away with up to 50mm suspension lift before you need cert, and big power increases and mods etc need cert look up lvvta website its about 450 a pop so do everything you wont then cert it. They do a few little test to make sure the trucks safe for everyday use

how did you get 75mm lift on the the front IFS .
Any more than about 30mm and you run out of down travel , causing bad road handling and allways lifting a wheel off road .
any more than 2" suspension in the rear and the rear won't work very well offroad either , as you have no down travel.

Affermarket torsions are for more front load ie bullbar winch etc , they do not give you lift.

I had 4 inch in my beam axled surf if u find my build there was nothing wrong with the flex, and well couple mates have had torsion bars fitted by arb n tjm forlifting a truck with no bullbar..... They have a heavier spring weight or something and hold vehicle higher, if you spline them right and treak them it sat at about 65-70mm at front down travel is shit even stock it ifs its never good and it handle sweet still as the torsion bars arent stressed like if you just wind them to 50mm if doing 50mm only

this has been talked about a garzillian times before .

you can't lift a IFS surf more than 30-35mm in the front by winding the torsions or fitting aftermarket ones.

you will have no down travel and no certifier will give it a cert ......

2inch body lift, u dont need a cert for this, higher then 2inch body lift, u do need cert, and thanks for ur input people, but really hasnt helped alot to be honest, as some people are saying this and that and blah blah, and just confusing the issue, 4wdbits.co.nz sed to wind the torsions up 2inchs, they rekn 2inchs is ok in a surf to wind them up, but u no, im looking a spending some big coin, and dont wana go and do a 2inch suspension lift, to find that i need to really be doing a 4inch....

i think my plan is going to be, 2inch body lift, and in the front, 2inch ball joint spacers, and wind the torsions up 1inch, rear, just 3inch longer spriings , once all is in then,new longer shocks all around...

I had a 2 inch suspension lift and a 1inch body lift on my old Surf with 33" tiers 15x8 -19 rims, it also had bigger torsion bars which just made it really stiff in the front even with a winch and steel bull bar on the front. If you wind them up to much you will just brake cv joints and lose the little down travel that you have.

i asked the wof fullas wen my solid front hilux went in for a wof, as it had a body lift, and they sed na, 50mm or less u dont need a cert for, but hey, if u going to be going for a cert for other stuff like suspensio lifts and big tyres and rims etc, no harm in putting it on the cert plate a

If you plan on keeping the IFS in your Surf, then 50mm is the most you want to lift if you want to keep some suspension movement. that plus a 50mm bodylift and you can fit 33 inch tyres, If you want anything more you need to go solid axle IMO

oyur plan sounds like a good one. Best to see if you can borrow some wheels and twist it up to see what you need to do.
I've had people tell me that you can run 33s on an unlifted safari yet i can/am with no issues. can even run truck chains .(do whack the guards tho)
If your lifting your truck to clear your tyres and getting a cert then i would do a minimal susp lift and body lift it. that way it keeps the pressure of the cvs and tie rods so you don't blow/bend them every time you go out.

u can get proper 4inch suspension lifts, i lookd at websites in ozzy, and 5grand+ is what it is going to cost a, maybe just drop back to 32 tyres? the guy with the photo posted, what offset is ur rims? as the rims i planning on using stick out alot (-44) and that where my problems are, as at full lock they will hit the guards, that is why i want to go up. i have seen a local surf on 32 11.5 tyres, but the rims were only 15x8 and not as an extreme off set as i going for,

rims in the photos are both 15x8, and whatever offset a solid axle toyota has. I wouldn't run 33/12.5 inch tyres on a 10 inch rim, you'll pop the bead real easy off road.

-44 15x10 will stick out approx the same distance as a
-24 15x8
the extra offset is to account for the extra Rim width.

I'm running custom flipped -44 15x8's with 33x12.5 , no suspension lift , 2" body lift and I only get slight scrubbing behind the front wheels after the BFH treatment .

yep 10in rims will cause bead popping. also lowers the height of the tyre as it has to strech to fit the rim.
If it hits the gaurd at lock then maybe spend the money getting your guards cut instead of big susp lift? Just a thought.

what needs extending when putting a body lift in, im lookin to do it sometime in the future to fit 33's but want to know whats exactly involved b4 starting the job. also is it worth getting bigger diff ratios when going up to 33's as i often tow a horse float and i know that with bigger tyres you get power loss each inch u go up. cheers
