Fitting a Winch to a 1998 Mistral

Evening all.

So I was wandering around supercheap auto today and one of these mysteriously found its way home....

the 9500 lb one for $399.00.

I stopped at autokraft in Palmerston north and they tell me they can't mount a bullbar on this thing..

But I could mount the winch without it effecting the airbag system... aslong as it was a bolt on bolt off affair with the chassis.

One advantage i do have over the similar aged terrano is this still has a seperate chassi/body combination.

I once removed the SRS from a primera for motorsport purposes and it still got a warrant of fitness. could i do the same for this?

If not has anyone made bars or a mounting plate for a winch for a mistral before, any pitfalls i should look out for?

I now have to go hide it in the shed before the wife comes home. will check in later

An R50 pathfinder bar might be similar since its based on a pathfinder (terrano2/mistral)

ARB 3938020 Sahara bar

Yeah they do, but there nudge bars.. they will never handle the force that a 9500 pound winch can apply to it, it'll ripp it clean off the mounts and damage all my electricals.

some one has asked for pictures and a how to. so here goes...

the pictures

http://s1309.beta.photobucket.com/user/ ... 2/library/

and the how to....

some 12mmx 150mm steel plate, a mig welder, a drill, a 4 inch grinder, a 12 inch crescent, some 19mm bolts and a fuckin big hammer..oh ...and some black gloss spray paint.

take the bumper and subframe off. measure the distance between the two mounts.

use this as the measurement for the length of plate you need to cut.

center the drum on the plate. not the winch but the winch drum as the motor housing and gearbox housings are not equal. mark the holes and drill accordingly.

measure in 65mm from both sides along the front edge of the plate.
draw a line between that mark and the back corners of the plate.
you should get something like this when you cut them off

http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s621/crashbandicoot2/DSCF2656_zps9171c0af.jpg

your new brackets will look alot like the factory bumpers one, just 12mm thick instead of 2mm thick, you will also need to notch the bottom of them as they protrude forward past the radiator to clear the body mounts.

the should protrude far enough forward to clear the chassi, the body and still have 150 mm or so left over.. drill holes using original bumper frame as template and bolt them in place.

now sit your winchplate(with winch bolted to it) infront of the vehicle on some 4x2 blocks(or trolley jack) and lift it till it sits center and flush with the bottom of the protruding plates already bolted to the chassis.

allow some space between the body of the winch and the body of your truck 20mm for example ...then mark on the protruding plates where this lines up.

on the inside of the bracket plates bolted to your truck take a square and draw a line up the steel vertically from where the back of the winch plate sat.

cut a deep V into the steel on both sides (passengers side and drivers side...not both sides of each plate)and use the two triangle bits you cut off earlier as a guide to the angle you need to bend them in toward each other.

the V will close up as you bend them inwards. once on the correct angle, cut again down the same line creating the V again so we can fill it with weld.

forward of this V on the bracket plates, bevel the bottom edge where the winch plate will be welded to it, same principle as the V cut is to give the weld surface area, hence strength.

put the winch plate and winch back in position and check everything is good to go, then unbolt the winch off the plate, sit the plate in position and tack it in place with some weld.

you can now remove all the timber and jacks holding it up.

you now need to make some mounts for the fairlead. my principle was dead center no higher or lower. the center (vertically and horizontally )of the fair lead is the same as the winch drum, cant go wrong with that,

grab some 50mm x6mm and bridge the gap accross the front of the winch mount above where the cable will run.

then either side of the drum weld in some more 50mm x 6 mm vertically like this ....

http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s621/crashbandicoot2/DSCF2649_zps07617e74.jpg

thats the major stuff.

weld it all up paint it put the cables on the winch (then bolt it in)

after that mount the solenoid pack. the cables are just the right length to do it like this...

http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s621/crashbandicoot2/DSCF2644_zps51f0d075.jpg

then cut the plastic bumper to fit including notching the top so you have access to the clutch... put the 3 bolts in on each side near the wheel arches this will hold the plastic bumper on fine(dont forget your indicator lights)

http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s621/crashbandicoot2/DSCF2646_zpsefbd86fc.jpg

fit the nudge bar and drill and bolt these bits (which I havent done yet)

http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s621/crashbandicoot2/DSCF2647_zps75a73266.jpg

and if it turns out right it'll look like this...

http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s621/crashbandicoot2/DSCF2489_zps54008628.jpg

and if it works it;ll look like this

http://i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s621/crashbandicoot2/DSCF2645_zpsf3754dfb.jpg

So as you can tell, i'm not an engineer. just a bloke in a shed.

Disclaimer. No accurate measurements were confirmed during construction.
Knock 'O' meters may vary depending on brand
Eye 'O' meters may vary depending on age and quality.

I have stalled this winch on a double line pull deliberately to test the winch mount, this design was made with pulling in a straighter line as possible.

As it is deemed an accessory and not a bull bar as such it is deemed legal on a SRS eqipped vehicle...not that it has airbags anymore either.
