Purchased a 95 Cherokee last week and loving it....at least until 4wd is selected. Then it is musical grinding and clunking noises coming from the front. Will get underneath on the weekend, but any obvious stuff to be checking? Also, if u joints need replacing, where best place to get them? we only have a repco and super cheap in rotorua, that I'm aware of anyway.

Hey, welcome to the world of owning a jeep............
It could be a number of things, but is most likely the Double Cardan Joint. Not to difficult to replace (see link), but not sure where to get parts in rotorua.

Can describe the noise and when it starts.

The noise is like a slight grinding/scraping noise at very low speed, say 10kph then when put foot on the go-fast pedal, it changes to a rythemic clunk which seems to dissipate the faster you go. This is in 4wd full-time.
I had a look under the car today and checked diff fluid, drained and refilled, checked transfer case oil and was at check/fill hole. Red oil started to drip out of the top check/fill hole.
In two wheel drive, if I turn the passenger wheel, it turns the drivers wheel opposite direction. If I turn the drivers wheel, the passenger wheel does not rotate. Unfortunately I only have one set of axle stands otherwise I would lift whole vehicle and run in 4wd to try and pin-point source. Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Grant

Take the front driveshaft off and drive to test. If noise goes away, that's your problem. Could be the cardan joint or u-joints.
As for rare tyres not rotating, it just shows that its likely an open carrier.
