failed cert - after your opinions

Post by jonossiksilvia »

so took my truck for cert today and failed on 2 things:

need a sway bar on the front

brakes not good enough

the truck (1990 surf) has a coil sas swap from a prado fitted. will a prado sway bar fit? anyone have pics of one fitted to a surf or prado esp pics of where it mounts to the chassis?

brakes: failed on brake fade on third stop and lots of pedel travel. - hits floor and 35's fitted to truck.

has rebuilt 4 pot calipers
new rear cylinders for drums
4wd bendix pads
machined rotors
total $600 bucks from save r brakes
full fluid change
i bleed the brakes 5 times

is it time to get the master cyliner rebuilt? is it cheaper to rebuild or buy new?

what else could be the problem?

is it possible to pass cert running 35"s?

searching didnt help

did you set the load sensing valve to match the suspension lift?

all i did with mine was make a bracket to lift the mount on the diff to the same height as the lift.

master cylinder about 170 bucks from repco, worth replacing if you have excess travel, apparently the spring inside goes weak over time reducing rear brake pressure? you can get kits from repco/bnt but i dont think its worth all the arsing about. i just bought a new one earlier this week.

Does your rear proportioning valve have a bleed nipple on it ? if so try bleeding it up there they can get air bubbles trapped up there.

Also see if you can get a master with a larger bore on the cylinder, the pedal will then be required to travel less to push the same amount of fluid.

if you've got lots of pedal travel and the pedal hits the floor when braking the jokers right you've got brake problems. Could be the M/C or it could be lack of adjustment on the rear drums, easy way to see if its the rear drums causing the problem is to clamp off the rear brake hose with a pair of vice grips and see if the pedal comes back up hard and dosent hit the floor. Its all time and money which no one seems to have these days but a good oppotunity to ditch the stoopid rear drums and throw a set of discs on the back and if you've got another $400-500 bucks to spend on a second VH40 remote booster to stick on the front brake circuit you'll be peeling your face off the windscreen everytime you hit the brakes too hard with 35's on :D

i think end of day ill get a new master cylinder as its prob the orginal 1 (282xxx,kms). load sensing valve was adjusted and the cert man said he can notice the rear brakes working

ive pretty much decided a new m/c is the go. the cert guy did say he could tell the rears were working fine. rear disks are option but not at this stage unless necessary needed. yeah remote booster does spring to mind but have a very cramped bay as it is. cheers

You shouldn't need a remote booster on a surf, mine has passed two certs on 35s, still drums on the rear. Did you bed them in properly when you bought the pads, could be something as simple as that?

If your peddle is going to the floor I'd say youve still got air in the system. The proportsioning (spelling  ) should have a bleed nipple facing the rear bumper, yet to see one which doesnt. I've had troubles with the brakes on that red double cab. Put disks on the rear and ended up having to pressure bleed the system. Brakes are alot better now but are looking at finding a bigger booster.
As for your sway bar when Sam (Jammysammy) got one made for his Surf he bent up a mock up swaybar out of 20mm rod, then took that to Ballemy & East and they copied it. Think it cost him $150.

Only two issues tho, you must have sone a pretty good job there fella

Does the pedal always go to the floor or just after he's done the brake test an boiled the brake fluid in your calipers? Does the pedal feel ok when you've bled it an adjusted the shoes?

Just a thought.
How old are your brake hoses?
May be worth checking them all for splits or bubbles when the brake peddel is pushed by a helper.
