TD42 Turbo

Looking for the best turbo option for my lwb patrol. Something with awesome power, not to much lag and not 2 hard on the poket. Mainly will be for 4x4 use and daily driving.

Not exactly saying much with that statement.....
4x4 use and daily driving is why nissan used the turbo that they used. go to the wreckers and get a +T setup.

there are plenty of options out there it just depends on how capable with the tools you are and how much you want to do yourself.
The tdo5(16g small), t25(on small side) and a t28 are good sizes if you are going to use a standard pump,
If your going to get pump modded then there are heaps you can use.
Turboed my last truck for total cost of $1000. That included 3in exhaust,all the oil lines,oil return,silicone joiners/bends,turbo(2nd hand),rebuild kit,boost gauge,pipe for manifold(steam pipe),hose clamps and all the other bits and pieces needed.
Could have done it for less if i had researched better so i didn't have to redo things

Bang for buck -You cant beat a TD05 16g off a Mitsi evo 4 upwards, if you can get an evo 6 one with the titanium bits for not too much that would be the s..t
I got an evo 4 one for $280 off trade me that looked pretty grubby and sad when it turned up but thought I'd just mount it, get it running and keep an eye out for a better one.
This sad looking used turbo has been pulling 15 psi for 18 months and around 30,000 km with no hastles. Also I have never hooked up the water cooling and considering that a diesel runs much cooler egts than a petrol I dont think I will bother.
Dont go for the subaru TD05's -the Mitsi ones are better.
Oh and lastly, get an EGT gauge before you even drive it...

the subaru ones are okay if you don't run more than 13psi unless you put a high boost rebuild kit then they are good for upto 20psi.
Also i'd hook up the water cooling as it helps the oil retain its viscosity when things get hot

I will definiatly put in a full 3" exaust, have been told to look at turbos with 0.63 hot and cold end. or go down to 0.60 for hot end for it to spool quiker. at the moment probly just gona get a cheap t3/t4 turbo

what year TD42 is it ?
some of the atmo ones have lighter pistons and rods. you need to keep boost and fuel conservative on them. i can't remember which years had the stronger internals.

good point. If your truck has the black tappet cover then i wouldn't be turboing it. Very likely to melt a piston.
Silver top then go for it.
Just remember that the stanard pump wont support a big turbo or massive boost. Just doesn't flow enough fuel

the lighter ones are ok to turbo, just keep boost down and keep fuel down and they will be fine. intercooling will help a lot and use a turbo thats quick to spool up.

prety sure its a 1990, and it is a silver top, and it has a inline injector pump on it not the rotary style

nice, they are sort after. they are basically the truck version, nice and strong.
