Whats the biggest spare you can carry on the standard mounts for a 97 TJ Wrangler? I have a standard tyre on there at the moment, but looking to have a bigger spare. Or is it better going down the custom road to fit a 33 on there?

thanks

Well, I carried 32" BFGs for about six on the stock tailgate and it used to twist and creak often. Tailgate was slightly harder to close as well. I moved over to rear ARB bar and tyre carrier, problem solved. Tailgate is free and no more noises.

I had a 33 inch on my standard 1, used to sit hard on bumper when rear door closed I had to modify the rubber stoppers on the door ( add spacers with longer bolts), because offset (-24 ) of rims are different to standard, and also had trouble hooking up some trailers because tire sat too low and coupling wouldn't fit on ball, so modified standard carrier, all now sits about 4 -5 inches above rear bumper, in doing this, Tire is solid on rear door and no wobbling around, but still a heavy tire to have on there, will get round to having a rear carrier one day.

yeah mate you find most factory spare wheel mounts arent upto being able to carry the extra weight of bigger wheels and they start buckleing and bending shit and wrecking rear doors if they are mounted on them and also the often dont have the clearances to fit and the tyre rubs and hits on everything.... stick with your space saver spare for now :D
