KZJ78 Suspension Bump stop size help needed.

Post by Henry »

Hi

Am I right in thinking the bump stops on the chassis rails should hit first as the suspension travel hits its limit.

I have been measuring the gaps in the rear suspension. if I measure things as they sit the shocks have 130 mm free space gap. 330 mm for the shocks compressesd and 460 mm for the gap they fit in.

the Bump stops have a free space gap of 165mm.

The springs have 290 mm gap - minus 8 spring wraps at 18 mm each leaves a free space gap of 146mm.

So looking at that I think I need to put 35mm under the bump to make it hit that first?

Or because the the shocks are set closer to the piviot point I need to do some other maths?

thanks

It should be coils (its a prado I think), how old/good is the suspension?

I haven't packed any of my bump stops...
And have longer coils and shocks...
If you are really worried... Pull the coils and make sure the shocks don't bottom out...
If a coil binds.. who cares....As long as the shock hasn't bottomed out and caused internal damage...
There are also hydraulic bump stops out there....

I had to pack the bump stops about 80mm. Thats with 100mm lift coils - my shock is 560mm pin to pin fully extended but there wasnt enough space for it to compress without moving the top shock mounts. (found that the hard way by blowing up a set of ranchos by bottoming them out) Changing mounts (best answer) was outside my skills so I just extended the bumps.

I have run various shocks over the years and never had a shock blow out....
Have used
OME N27 340mm collapsed 570mm extended (front)
OME N29 310mm collapsed 507mm extended (rear)
Tough Dog FC41397 350mm collapsed 570mm extended. (used them front and rear from memory)

Now using EFS...Not sure P/N but similar specs to above....

And not modified the truck..... But the latest EFS were pin pin for the rear... So cut off the top pin and welded on the eyes from the old shocks....
