Boost gauge and EGT install

I have a 1990 80 series vx cruiser and want to install a boost gauge and EGT gauge. I want to install the EGT pre turbo.
I have heard various stories about the probs braking and going through the turbo so the first question is can any recommend a good quality set up and where to purchase from.
The second question is can anyone recommend where to install the EGT sensor on this model cruiser. A photo would be good.
Third question is what boost would you recommend running and how is the boost side of it connected and controlled as I have never installed all this before.

I would reccomend an Auberins Digital EGT gauge, I have installed this gauge and it works great also very cheap and good quality, I did gets this from the States.
http://www.auberins.comAs for the install in this model I have no frigging Idea.
I have put mine were the EGR pipe was bolted to the engine block.
Cheers

Thanks. Had a look at these gauges on the net. They look good. Are the probes good quality.
Can anyone else answer my other questions.

Also with those gauges do you need 2 gauges one for the boost and one for the EGT or can you connect both 2 the one gauge.

They are good gauges, been running EGT one for a few years now....and with probe pre turbo... Its a bit of an urban myth re probes breaking....They tend to burn away....
No you cant have one gauge and two sensors....The gauges are set up for each application....But can be re used for other applications... Just not two at once...

Thanks for that. I assumed that was the case but I couldn't find any documentation to verify. Any more help would be appreciated. Also on boost controllers best sort and how to install them.

I have just finished reading an article in a aussie mag about diy boost and egt gauge installs. They advise putting the thermocouple in the dump pipe
The magazine is "Modified 4wd's".
When I get home I can take a pic and post it as it will no doubt stir up a great debate
Cheers,

Steer away from the "autoguage" brand EGT. I had to return one 3 times before I got one reading within 50deg of actual temp. The first one was under-reading by about 300deg, 2nd try over-reading by 150. Got sick of returning them so reluctantly keep the third...

thanks for that info, i had been looking at buying a autogauge one off trademe, but no point if they are that far out.

How do you know it was under or over reading? Did you have something to compare it to?
I got the expensive auto gauge model with stepper motor and it seems fine.....

Just a matter of comparing the guage reading to ambient temp, then again with the probe in boiling water. First time it was pretty obvious with it reading WAY below zero at ambient temp, and the highest reading I could get was 200deg in fifth gear at 2000rpm and 10psi boost with foot flat blowing shitloads of black smoke...

i've got a couple of autogauge egt gauges and also an auberins gauge.
no problem with them. had a fault with the boost sensor (sensor less than $10 what do you expect!) on the boost gauge.
spoke with a guy from a gauge instrument outfit and he said the deign of the autogauges circuit boards is quiet good.

That is usually caused by the wires to the thermocouple been crossed over

Thanks for the replies. I have decided to go for a Auberins digital gauge so have ordered the gauge and probe for the EGT. Now I need to look at what I need to do to increase the boost. Information on what I need to do and purchase would be appreciated. I will go for the Auberins boost gauge as well but I need to know what I have to adjust to increase the actual boost. I currently have the exhaust manifold and turbo off the vehicle as I had a leaking manifold due to 2 sheared studs, so nows the time to do all the mods. Looking at the turbo there is the wastegate actuator that has a small rubber hose off the top to the outlet side of the compressor turbo housing. I am assuming this is where I would cut into this hose and mount a boost controller. Would I be right or is there another way.

thats correct in adjusting the boost. When you put the boost adjuster in make sure you put the tee for the boost gauge on the compressor side so you get a proper boost reading.
Also how much are you going to wind it up. any more than 15psi and you really should be running an intercooler. even at that without an intercooler you'll be pumping a heap of hot air into the motor.
Fyi the ct26 that toyota uses is only good for 18psi max. Then all they are is a really grunty hot air gun.

Not sure how much I'm going to boost it. Will increase it a bit at a time and see how it effects the EGT. Am towing a 3.5 tonne boat and the landcruiser is on 35" tyres so its a bit sluggish. I have changed the diff ratios but still need to be able to increase the fuel a bit. Don't know what the factory boost setting is but once all the gauges arrive I'll conect them up and see what the setting is before I start increasing it. If needed I may put an intercooler in.

if you use it for towing and have 35s then i'd defenitly be putting an intercooler on it. that combined with a 3in exhuast will give you the biggest gains.
they run 10psi standard to.

What would be the best make and model of boost controller for my landcruiser and where to purchase. Its a 4.2 Diesel.

Is there any way I can get the turbo to spool up faster from a standing start. Getting rolling from the start with the boat on is hard going but as soon as the turbo spools up its away.

the boost controller will help a bit. increasing fuel will help the most but its also the biggest risk.

I've still got to fit my boost gauge and the Tee boost controller. I went Auberins way with all my gauges (looks good and the alarms,min/max memory, dims with light switch and built in relays sold me) and the tee boost controller is simple once set (it works on a spring/ball bearing that is dialed in to the pressure you want and doesnt allow the waste gate to creep open).
One day when I feel energetic (and indestructible hands) I will get them fitted.

"This will have a noticeable effect in the off idle response and can have the turbo spinning up and boosting right down from 1,000 rpm."

I had a read but my engine is the earlier model not the 24 valve model so I'm not sure that its the same

I have the 12v 1HDT and its exactly the same - just did this today, but to turn down the fuel a fraction

Thanks might look at doing that once my trucks up and running again.
