2012 Hilux tyre upgrade options

Post by mark56 »

Has anyone had experience putting 265 R17s on the new sr5 hilux with or without modification? 245/70 R17 are the correct size but would prefer larger size which I understand will require the truck to be lifted. Just wondering peoples opinion and don't want to rush in and alter dynamics of a brand new truck.
Thank you for any help!

Have had no experience with something that new but its only going up approx 1 inch in diameter and width ie from a 30 to a 31 so i can see that being an issue as id hope like hell that itd have more than a 1/2inch clearance under the guards

Have a look on http://www.newhilux.net, you should be able to go 265 70 r17 with no lift, 265 65 i think is the factory is it not?

265 70 r17 are 32 ruffly

If you have lift you could go 255 80 i think it is ruffly 33s

May i edit and add that alot of the guys say the 05 to current model luxs handle and drive alot better with aftermarket suspension

Yes sorry you're right, 265 65 is what they come out with. Its hard to find a 50/50 mud road tyre in that size. Any suggestions? Cooper make an ST @ 245 65 R17 but their ST max (which is want) is 265 70 R17. Some dealers say unmodified the ST max will rub the front guard and require lifting, anyone know if this is the case?

not sure about the new shape hilux, but the previous model that came out in 06/07 ish would only take a 32" max and that was with some wheel alignment work to pull the castor forward so it didnt rub on inner guards

I would imagine that not much has changed in this respect

ive got 31" maxxis trepadors on my 2009 work hilux, fits sweet as with what seems like a fair bit of room left. mostly on road and for a mud tyre they ride really nice. Its a forestry ute so gets a bit of a thrashing offoad aswell and they go pretty well, considering they aint the most capable of 4wds
