Please skool me on glow plugs and timers....
I am almost free from the toyota ECU for my 1KZT....
After doing the manual pump and manual control for the trans...The glow timer is the last thing the ecu is used for...
Now according to the engine manual there is two cycles in the glow timing...
One for the main glow and one for after glow....
I have picked up a universal glow timer which I could hook into my system to drive my glow relays....
But want to know more about this after glow...
Does the glow plugs still glow while the engine is running???
Stay / come on when required to assist fuel burn??
What should I expect if I put in the new timer.....
I suppose it would be like the old time diesels... Just glows for start.... and thats all....

Most aftermarket glow timers have an adjustable glow time, then for afterglow just pulse glows on and off (rather than reduced voltage going to glow plugs).
The afterglow helps idle when engine is cold, as hot glows assist combustion.
Some vehicles (like courier) can glow for 5min after starting (part of the reason they chew through glowplugs). Hard on the battery if doing lots of small trips!
You'll probably find adjusting glow timer to suit your glow plugs, and a few afterglow cycles, will be enough. May just have to keep a touch of throttle on the real cold (heavy frost) days.

Also simple solution if your motor is in good condition is just to put a push button in. Hold for 10secs then fire up.

Pajeros are chronic for shitting the glow ecu (yep it has its own computer!) so a lot of guys put manual switches in, just make sure you only put a push and hold type switch in otherwise one day you'll forget to turn it off!

The timer I have is a real simple one with no after glow...
Just hook it in and dial up how long you want....
It also can sense when engine is hot so not so much glow....
Got it off Trade me used for $10 bucks. usual over a hundy new....

Whenever you get around to it and no longer need your ecu and if willing to sell id be keen on a spare
