Rear trailing arm bushes for Toyota Prado KZJ78?
So I failed wof again today. Apparently 4 of my rear trailing arm bushes are extremely worn out. The place quoted me for around $80-140 each for after market ones. Toyota ones are around $230 each. Labour hours around 4 totalling to $340. So in total I'm looking at around $1k for the whole job.
Went to Midas and they estimate the job for 2 hours. Honestly I don't even know which one to believe.
So here I am asking for advice again. How long you guys reckon it should take and how much should the bushes cost?
Also, I need to change my front brake pads and possibly the brake plates as well. How much will those normally cost and how long it would normally take?

I bruoght a set of Nissin arms with good bushes, cheap of Trade-Me, pushed out the bushs, then pressed them into the Prado arms.

OldBlue, did you do the whole job yourself or did you only bought the parts and bring it to a workshop to finish it? Don't think there's anything interested in trademe now.
Re: Rear trailing arm bushes for Toyota Prado KZJ78?
Turned up a pushing tube to the correct size from steam pipe, then used a small press, did the job myself with the help of fellow offroad members. do one side at a time.

That price sounds about right I replaced mine last month. Took a 40 ton press to get them out, it's like shocks you don't really feel them wearing out till you put new ones in makes a world of differents to the way the truck handles I'd be looking at the front ones to
Re: Rear trailing arm bushes for Toyota Prado KZJ78?
I got some from the mount shop... swapped them out myself..
Need a press as the old ones are hard to remove... new ones are easy as....
Mount shop have a new online catalog...using nissan ones.
However they don't last as long as Toyota originals...

Make sure you buy FACTORY bushes, either Prado, 80 Series or GQ Nissan. Check out my comments in the thread that Oldblue posted, and the link in that thread as well. Factory bushes are far superior to aftermarket ones, and will last way longer.

Thanks for all your replies.
I live in Auckland but I'm going down to Palmerston North in 2 weeks time for study.
So IcedJohnno you reckon don't cheap out on the additional $200 and get it from Toyota?
How long do you reckon it will take to do all 4 of them if I bring it to the shop? I don't want to get ripped off by getting charged additional labour.

If you want to keep the labour component down remove all the arms yourself and take them into the shop to get the bushes pressed out. You can get the bushes out yourself with a hacksaw but its a cnut of a job and hard work trying to cut through the rubber

Re: Rear trailing arm bushes for Toyota Prado KZJ78?
Don Kyatt in Hobill Ave, Manukau city will have the bushes. At $230 each from Toyota, I would cheap out ...but that's just me
I'm not sure what the going rate is at the moment, but I'm guessing you could get all 6 from them for not much more than the price of 1 from Toyota, certainly less than the price of 2. Then, like Sadam said, you just need to find someone with a press to push the old ones out, and the new ones in.

Yep definitely go good bushes. These four bushes have to flex big-time each time your suspension articulates. If you read my thread (2 links back via OldBlues post) you will see the non factory ones I got from SAS only lasted 20,000 Kms. Previous factory ones had done approx 190,000 !! I am now running the GQ NISSAN ones as these were cheaper than Toyota and are also known to last.
I changed mine using a mates press. It took me about 3 hrs, wo to go. Longest bit was finding some correctly sized tube to push the old bushes in to.

Here's a cheaper option for a genuine Nissan bush...
http://www.roadrunneroffroad.com.au/Radius-arm-bush-Rubber-Genuine---Diff-end-GQ-Patrol-.html
I'm not sure if they ship to NZ, but could be worth looking into.

Check with Cockram Nissan in CHCH they are pretty good on pricing sometimes for genuine stuff.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushes for Toyota Prado KZJ78?
Calvin, are all 6 of the rear trailing arm bushes the same? Can I just order 6 of these from The Mount Shop and bring them to a mechanic? They are rubber ones right?

you gave the part number for a Nissan GQ bush. This will fit into my KZJ78 right?

They defiantly fit the two that attach to the axle end....
Haven't had to change the single one that attaches to the chassis...
However mine are starting to fail.... only been in 18 months... When they finally fail I think I will get Nissan originals from the Nissan man... The rubber is better.....Cost a bit more but will last longer...But are cheaper that Toyota originals....
They last o.k on the front as they only seem to get a work out when off roading...

Hmm.. So you reckon don't go for the nolythane or urethane ones? But go for the rubber ones instead? Unfortunately I don't even know which one is worn. All the wof guy told me was there are 6 of them but 4 are worn. And I really don't know how to measure them or else it will be easy to ask a Nissan guy.
I think I might spend a little extra so I won't have to worry too much in the future. I don't really go hardcore offroading so I doubt I'll wear them out quickly.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushes for Toyota Prado KZJ78?
I just went to Midas today and they quoted me only $365 for the bushes including labour. They also told me rubber ones are cheaper and don't last as long as nolathane. Now I'm really confused..
I looked it up on the internet and some people are saying rubber is cheaper and some say rubber is more expensive. So I really don't know which is which.
Then people start saying rubber gives a smoother ride while they wear out quicker, nolathane lasts longer but you can feel every single little bump on the road. Is this true? Because I would prefer a smoother ride than longer lasting.

$75 each from Cockram Nissan, the cheap ones I put in less than 5000kms ago are starting to f*ck out.

I think the consensus is...
Aftermarket rubber= flexible, great off road, cheaper than factory but don't last as long.
Factory rubber = flexible, great off road, Toyota expensive, Nissan a bit cheaper and last well.....
Nolathane= not very flexible, not good off road, cheapish. (and from personal experience don't last in an off road setting they tear out)

Hi,
Can someone PM me a rego no or chassis no so that I can work out what the toyota part number is.
Or if you have the part number that would be even better.
Are the axle end bushes the same for the front and rear.
Thank you
Cheers
Tim

Re: Rear trailing arm bushes for Toyota Prado KZJ78?
Thanks for your help guys but unfortunately I went for Nolathane as I need them fixed before this Saturday. Now another issue came up.
$240 for a new tailpipe from "Midas". But went for a WOF re-inspection at "HomeTune" and they told me the tailpipe was old and it has only been welded. Should only cost $50. Went back to Midas and they told me to come back next day as the boss is not in.
The boss told me that it was too rusted to be welded so the whole thing should be replaced. Now they only welded it and charged me the price of a new tailpipe.
What does anyone think of this?
