can definitely see what hes talking about, and he has some very valid points.

i wonder if not using rated recovery points on vehicles will be something the insurance company will fight over. if so theres something to back your answer.....

yes/no
while they are not really "rated" the whole idea of using rated points is to get everyone fitted with similar points mounted in a similar way so they are predicable in use.
that way other people do not have to guess on how much force your points will handle.

My understanding is that 10000lb rated hook will straighten and let the strop come free when overloaded not rip of or break free becoming a projectile.

Yip, my understanding too (providing they are mounting correctly). This is the reason I use them

Is it, Mike, when we talk of "Rated recovery Points" that we are referring. not to the mounting of a hook, but the hook, itself?

Hence, you MUST have a rated HOOK as your recovery point, NOT a factory fitted towing eye, tiedown point?

This is how it was pointed out to me by the guys up in the Waikato, who had me in their care during mu initial training as a new 4WDriver.

That is my understanding too. I gess a rated hook is only as strong as it is mounted.

On that point here is ccvc minimum mounting requirements, if anybody doesn't know how to mount there hooks.

been seeing a few problems on forums with lighter 4x4's ie 3mm chassis.
captive nuts being ripped out, nuts being pulled through the chassis. lack of load spreaders or backing plates.
also D's are favored (and they are "rated") which means a shackle is required, which adds to the missiles weight.

this guy puts his snatch strap inside his receiver hitch and then puts the locking pin through

looks like a plug for ARB gear

thoughts on this method ?

bending the pin and not being able to get it back out.
also i would be concerned about strap being pulled against the edge of the hitch.
