FJ 40 starting help

Hi All,

I am having some difficulties starting my fj40 it's the 4.2 f2 engine. Recently had the alternator reconditioned put it back in changed the spark plugs (Gapped correctly) It was hard to start before but is now almost impossible.

I have set the carb back to it's baseline settings and once it is running it's running well. (It's a holley carb installed by the previous owner)

However it is very hard to get it running really just after some idea's as to where to go next ?

start off going back to a few basics and stick a new set of points in it those things always chew up points pretty quick, then check and set the timing and give it another cranking over and see how well it starts :D

are you familular with starting old carby sixes your not pumping the shit out of the throttle and flooding it while your trying to start it are you? :oops: Is the choke hooked up and working are you using it when you start the truck, I've had plenty of 2F's and they have all been real easy and reliable to start in all conditions Image

i had a problem with mine a few years back and it turned out to be the ignition switch itself had worn contacts inside meaning i would turn the key to far and it cut ignition power when cranking

The choke isn't set up and working the previous owner had it installed incorrectly thats my job for tonight to reset that and check that it's working.

Not pummping the throttle and am pretty sure it's not getting flooded. Will try and get the new points in as well. To be fair I am hoping that by fixing the choke issue it will sort it self out

Grab a volt meter and check the coil is being supplied power when you are cranking the engine over Cheers Andrew
