SC14 supercharger off a Toyota Supra. 3 pound at idle and 8.5 pound at 2400rpm, good for 90HP at the wheels. Search on Outerlimits for more info.

 I like this thread.......... 8)

I have been schemeing and dreaming about doing it one day myself as opposed to using a Turbo.

Be sure to post your findings!!!!!

I too looked at this, but was talked out of it.

There were a few guys on OL that went to turbos after running the SC's, but can't remember why

The biggest difference between the two is high speed the turbo has it all over the supercharger.

Supercharger has its own oil and is a stand alone unit the hardest bit is mounting it somewhere in line with the pullies Turbo's you put anywhere where the exhaust manifold can go.

I even know of a twin turbo 6 jetboat where the turbo is at the end of the exhaust (this was for testing they do need some back pressure).

Also Supercharger is slightly thirstier (always driven) and steal's about 2 HP at idle. Belts and alignment of the charger are the hardest part (I havent done one but know a few that have)

Would be interested to know if the Toyota SC's have a clutch system so they disengage when off the gas.
Be a little annoying going down steep hills with the SC trying to speed things up.

From what i have seen and schemed, the relocation of the power steering pump is the best option.

IMHO, a turbo would be a waste offroad, had one on the terrano and the surf and they didn't do much when crawling around in 2nd low. In fact, they were so dead down low that they used to stall way to easily. I liked my mates 2.4 N/A surf better offroad.

If i were to do a turbo conversion it would be with a small turbo so it would spool up quicker, and hence you use the top end anyway.

i'm not so sure turbos are a waste offroad my old neighbour has a fj40 with a 4 litre turbocharged diesel(i think it is 4 litre i may be wrong it is out of a later model cruiser)andf he certainly has enough power to get himself into and out of lots of trouble and not only that the whistle it has sounds great

i have a safari brand turbo on my 1990 swb safari with a k&n filter and a 3" exhaust with no muffler, we gave 1/2 a turn on the fuel pump and it makes power at idle, there is no lag at all , it totally changed the vehicle, it now drives like a car. the torque figure is now the same as my falcon xr8 ,and it pulls from a 1000rpm, be fore you bag turbos take 1 for a drive, the factory safari turbos are too small , you dont get the gains of a aftermarket 1, go for a t3 or bigger. it will climb steep hills like a rocket., and drive easier than a non turbo, having more torque at lower revs.

I got me a brand new (now looking quite used) Ssangyong Korando.
2.9l TDI. pulls from near idle, seems to be limited by the fact that I cant put bigger than 32 inch tyres on it with out body work. Bugger.
still under warranty....

bloody thing will do 170kph too, if I asked it. And I did. some twerp in a Holden Rodeo Diesel wanted to play.....

You couldnt talk me out of the turbo'd donk if you paid me.

Well... perhaps if you offered LOTS of money....

The Supercharger made it very cramped on the drivers side of the motor and hard to pull out the dip stick, The pully it ran off also shifted the fan forward very close to the radiator (the radiator showd signs of damage from where the fan had made contact). I also need to remove the plastic cowling in the engine bay to remove the radiator, the bottom bolts were rather tricky.

I also have a word file with scans from the manufactures brochuer and can email to anyone who wants it.

Also, do you have a spare pair lying around? May have to buy another set to get modded so theres no down time with the wagon.

Yeah, may have to take you up on that once I get a price. That, or I'll just see if Steve can cut and extend mine a little some time.

Cheers,
Dave
