Any ideas why on a 2L 2.4 Diesel Hilux the intake would make such a racket? Its boomy when idling and just gets louder until every other noise drowns it out. Its coming from the inlet and its significantly quieter when idling if I put hand over the intake somewhat.
It has a new air filter.
Its a NZ new model and looks like this under the bonnet with a long intake, a bit different to most I have seen.

They have a resonator, intake silencer/muffler from factory.
I have just removed mine as it has three hose clamps to connect it all and it just looked like too many places to let water in if not sealed properly On my old surfs there was a box inside the guard that did the same.
EDIT, air intake silencer/muffler resonator

This one appears to have no resonators at all, might explain it! As seen here, on the lower picture

Just a thought, Is the lid tight on the airbox? there is a second plate inside the lid, a dust collector, that plate may rattle if not fitted in correctly?

Just a quick sugestion, check your valve clearance if its sounds like a popingish noise from intake...
