Yip I have a pajero.. well wife does.. and it recently dropped a glowplug end  and yes there is a little damage to head and piston.. but just a little.. NOW since we noticed it getting harder to start I then checked the glowplugs and alas replaced them, took head off to check for bits etc.. all bolted up nicely etc.. and is a pig to start..
glow plug timer is where? and the solenoids seems to click and clack as it does its thing..
Am i missing something..? Next test is when its totally cold is bypass the glowplug solenoids and timmer and just jump start the glowplugs.. if it starts sweet then it'll be timer or noids..
Anything else I can check..?
thanks in advance

i have owned two l200 4d56 powered same as your pajero and they are bad starters i put new glow plugs in them and didn't make a difference played around with glow plug timers etc . i am about to put new injectors in my current l200 and will let you know if that improves anything, also i always glow mine till the voltage meter drops rather than the light flicking off other wise it just wont start!

probably the ecu that controls the relays, there are two relays (in front of the battery) one to operate the glow plugs before the engine starts and the other to operate them after it starts for a few seconds until warm. easy enough to wire up a switch to operate the first one. Took me about an hour, here is a write up:
Hi All!!

FYI - This is the order that I connected a manual glow plug switch:

Items required:

1. 3metres of 15amp twin cable Maplins - XS72P
2. Switch Maplins - N76CL
3. 4x female blue spade connectors Maplins - JH88V
4. 1x eyelet connector Maplins - JH73Q
5. 1x piggy back connector Maplins - L27AY
6. 10amp blade fuse (from e-bay)
7. Inline blade fuse adaptor (e-bay)
8. Crimper/spanners
9. 25mm drill bit and drill
10. 6x small cable ties

Tooled up I carried out the fitting as follows:

1. Locate and disconnect both batteries (remembering you are terminating power to items such as the stereo).

2. Secondly I located the glow plug relays. The one on the left of the picture (black nipples) is the pre heater relay, and the one on the right (blue nipples) is the post heater relay. Disconnect the small black clip on the top of the black nipple relay. This wire goes to the ECU unit in the passenger foot-well. This can be re-connected later.

3. Next I removed the battery closest to the windscreen, and remove the tray the battery was on. This allows me to start wiring and to feed one end of the wire into the passenger foot-well. The red/black cable on the right is the one I have fed through a small hole which has a rubber diaphragm. Now go into the passenger door and to underneath the glove compartment.

4. Next the wire needs to pass behind the main console and over to the driver’s side (this is very easy, and I took away a panel under the glove compartment to do this, but you might be able to do this without unclipping it.

5. The cable from http://www.maplins.co.uk is red and black, therefore I used the red cable from the +ve of the battery to the switch, and the black from the switch to the relay. I pulled open the glove compartment by unclipping the black clips either side, allowing me access to wire through to the driver’s side. Also I decided it was a dry and easy access point to place an inline fuse onto the red wire from the battery. Connected in with spade connectors.

6. I then pulled the cover off a small 22mm hole on the left side of the steering column and drilled it to about 25mm to fit the push in switch. I then fed the cable through and attached spade connectors to the switch.

7. The switch fitted nicely in place, but make sure the hole is not too small as this switch did get stuck in the ON position the first time I fitted it (not good!!!). The inside work is done!

8. Back under the bonnet I connected the red cable to the +ve terminal of the battery with an eyelet connector, and the black cable to the relay with a piggy back connector, allowing me the option to re-connect up the ECU. Now fingers crossed you should be able to control those “CLICKS”!!!
