Running a Diesel on Used Engine Oil.

Post by norsk »

Recently I have been reading up on running a Diesel on a mix of used Engine Oil and Diesel. There are quite a few people in the UK doing this.I was wondering if anyone has experiance of this in New Zealand.

The technique is to decant the Oil into containers and leave to sit,so any sludge falls to the bottom.Draw off the top 95% and filter through a .5 Micron Filter,a Oil filter on an Engine filters down to .1 Microns so your catching twice as much.

Then the Oil is mixed with Diesel at a ratio of 50%.Some people are running 60/40 in the Summer.Apparantly the Carbon in the Oil lubricates the Pump as well as the additives in the used Oil.

I have run my Chev 6.2 and a Unimog on 50/50 Diesel/unused Engine Oil.I found 120 Liters of Oil in a shed that was probably close to 30 years old.I experianced no more smoke or difficulty in starting,Exhaust temperature was slightly lower than normal and power was the same. The only downside was the exhaust gas smelled terrible.

the big problem is build up in the combustion chamber. if you run water injection it would clean it out.
the other thing is water in the oil. but if you heat it and get the bulk of it out the additives in the engine oil can deal with it.

Hmm. I was just reading this, http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 46&t=11254.
Probably a few more ideas floating around now.
Could well be worthy of more investigation, there's plently of waste engine oil out there...

I have done some testing on peugeot 309, I have a couple of 1/4 ball valves to switch from diesel to hot oil coming from 2L electric jug.
Ran ok on very hot oil, oil had been filter through 10,5,1 mircon filter bag from filtercorp.

I now have a elctronic version with 3way rotary sleeve valves to handle oil and diesel to and from the pump. Would have been installed in the nissan terrano if it hadn't been nix (truck stolen) from jaycar. Got the truck back minus everything in it.

On to version two, which isn't in the truck. Can provide details if anyone wants it.

I have a mate who has run his 2.8 bighorn on diesel/engine oil combo. Unfortunately he is not on this site.
I cant remember the rations he uses, but he starts it on pure diesel, and switches on the fly to diesel/oil mix (two tanks obviously) once at highway speed.
It smokes like a train and he has to take his injectors out and clean them for each WOF haha

I can run 100% oil in my diesel and have done so, but i have a heated fuel filter from factory, a donaldson fuel filter an inline fuel filter and a Bosch fuel pump.
I mix the oil with Redline 85 plus to improve the cetane value, diesel and a touch of acetone.
