assuming its only rods why not drop the bottom end and replace the rods. tones of busted engines to rip them out of.
not exactly a pro job but a whole lot cheaper than trying to find a good 2nd hand engine.

When I drowned my 2.4 surf a few years back it ended up with the number 2 and 3 con rods bent. I ended up removing the radiator to make room, pulled the head off, pulled the front diff out so i could get the sump off (realised after that I probably only had to drop the diff and not remove it) undid the caps on the rods and pushed em out the top. Got two rods from the wreckers and swapped the pistons and bearings over. Dropped them back in using cable ties to compress the rings. Torqued the caps up put the sump back on, diff in, head on, radiator in, new oil and filter and its been running fine ever since. Had to make a simple puller to get the cank pully off and a socket welded to a specially bent spanner so I could get one of the intake manifold bolts out (not sure if I had to do it that way but it was the easiest way I could see). The rods cost $150, head gasket $60 and then the oil, filter and some liquid gasket for the sump. Eazy job in the end, and for me well worth the experience. I was 15 then and it was my first time really working on an engine and I managed to do it all myself except lifting the diff back up. And it taught me a lesson about driving vehicles without snorkels through water.
Max.

Easier to pull engine and do it,
the head also has to come off to get piston and rod out together
With the engine running crack off the fuel line to each injector one at a time to find out if its just one cylinder in particular, it will generally run smooth on that faulty cylinder

diesels run and rely solely on compression, even a slightly bent rod will effect the engines performance and balance leading to premature bearing failure along the crankshaft.

mate done same thing to his 2.5 turbo courier, it didn't sound so bad tho, we bit the bullet and went for the it will fix it or #### it method and held it on governor and it straightened up, and has done easy over 50k km in past two years of hard towing etc, but if you wantin to keep motor i recommend pulling sump of and looking up at the rods for the sake of a sump gasket and bit of time
