Hi
I was wondering if anyone could suggest any good tracks in the rotorua area. We have three fairly well equipped vehicles, mud tyres on all, winch on one diff lock on another etc.
So we are looking tracks that will be a good challenge.
Anywhere round rotorua tarawera etc even out towards the east coast, wherever there is a challenge.
If anybody knows of any tracks around here could you please post back with a bit of detail about them, how to get to them, and also if they are open during the winter, and what sort of condition they are in if you have been on them recently.
Cheers.
Kent
Just out of interest is there anyone who knows where that photo was taken that is on the front page at the moment, It says its Rotorua.
Thanks
Where are some tracks in the rotorua area
Hi
Welcome to mud ?? the photo on the front page was taken in the Mamaku Ranges. This particular track was used in a winch challage last year and had been left until resently. We very lucky to have thousands of miles of tracks ranging from rocks, river crossings, barren land ( NZ idea of dessert) forestry easy roads to deep mud all within 1 hour of down town Rotovegas. Not forgetting Thompsons Track. Most tracks are only known to the locals (which can be a good thing from a safetey point of veiw,) and Im sure that if you post times dates you will find some of us more than willing to guide your group to where ever to do what ever. How ever
we insist on strict safety equipment requirments ( nothing too much just commom sense stuff and this keeps the land owners happy
)
post details on types models of vehicles as this can greatly effect which tracks to be used

were planning on a bout a 5 day trip, staying down in rotovegas somewhere and doing some 4wd trips, and hanging out, doing cool stuff,. lol, fishing maybe.

Hi Guys
I think you may have to inprove your safety equpment a little. As we work in with most of the land owners around here the forestry and DOC is very safety minded so we follow the rules.(most times). I will get back to you, PM email.
Alot of the tracks you will need to be shown then you can branch out in the same area by your self. No you dont need a guide for 5 days unless you are shoutin heaps of beers. Where the front photo was taken, not far from there, last year we went on a search and resuce, two experenced trampers were lost for two very cold nites These areas are not to be taken lightly this is not downtown Wood Head Forest. Even though we know these areas very well having worked and hunted them for many years I can still get bushed.
In july ( 19 th, I think ) there could be a few vehicals in Rotorua competing in a winch competition.
cheers DJ
