Intercoolers and exhausts Landcruiser VX 96

Am doing up my VX Landcruiser 96.
Were would it be best to get a bigger exhaust from.
Am finding it hard to decide what type of intercooler to get. So need advise.
Who is the best in Auckland to retune it after it has been intercooled.
Would really appreciate any help and advise I can get. I am reasonably handy with tools but am stretching myself to do the work myself if I can. Really want to learn to work on my cruiser myself.
Cheers Cameron

Rage 3" exhaust, cheap and does the job well. I think 4wd bits in Auckland stocks them.
Top end - go Beaudesert exhausts in Aussie.
Stay away from Scotts Rods exhaust - crap quality.

Intercoolers , well you have opened a can of worms there. Check out Lcool - http://www.lcool.org/forum/viewforum.ph ... 5f9a979d71 for countless threads and hundreds of hours reading on the subject.

I havent found a 80 series guru in NZ yet, so good hunting.

I can supply you an intercooler kit for your 80 series in 6-8 weeks. i can currently do them for the 12 valve ones an am working on the different parts required for a 24 valve one. price is around $1050.

Strx7 I an interested in your inter cooler
You need to supply more details and photos
What size it's it
does the price include gst
Does the price include shipping
Does the price include the whole kit, fittings hoses
are they cheap Chinese intercooler s?
Are they front or top mount
What type of power gains have you seen on previous installs
Do you have a website with more detail?
Are there any kits available in nz at the moment
Please take some time to put s more detail in an I'm sure you will have a lot more sales

Cheers
Mike

that is the 12V kit I can currently do.

38% power and torque increase with exhuast & intercooler kit at std boost pressure.

they are Front Mount, where it should be for maximum cooling.
I'm not GST registered.
I make these myself as a "hobby" for other 80 series owners.
piping is all polished alloy.
all hose clamps are good solid ones, not radiator hose type ones.
Intercooler is 450x230 bar and plate. Yes they are probably chinese but i have not had any issues with them, and the set up on my cruiser has been the test case and its been fine for 3 years.
They are designed to be fitted by a home handyman type person, all you need to fit them in some basic tools - 10/12/14mm spanner/sockets a Drill with a 6.5mm drill bit and a hacksaw - to modify your bonnet catch vertical stiffner so it then bolts to the top intercooler mount. the whole kit can bit fitted in 90 minutes or there abouts.
the kit gives you all pipes, all joiners, reducers, extra Bolts & nuts and a replacement inlet into the inlet manifold

I have been advertising these for a while, and while a number of people are interested, no one actually has purchased one from on here yet. as most people on here seem to want Interheaters (top mount) instead of Intercoolers.

With a FMIC i have never seen an inlet air temp above 70 degree celcius and thats after a long uphill tow in the heat of summer.
You gain alot of low down torque, as can be seen on the dyno sheet, and because of that you WILL also gain fuel economy.

If any one wants a custom top mount intercooler made, i've got a good contact that makes them from home, you would have to come up with a design tho. I still have the drawings from when he made my 1kz intercooler if anyone wants one.

I am going back next week to pay him and see if he can work out a price for a few for those that are interested, hoping to put a fan in and also a water sprayer?just waiting till the scoop gets here to see how much room there is.

the main issues with a top mount are, short of fitting a liquid nitrogen sprayer onto the intercooler core they just soak up the heat from the motor as they are parked right on top of it.

and.... by trying to force air into the engine bay from the top via a scoop, you are pressurising the engine bay, meaning the amount of airflow coming thru the radiator will lessen.

best airflow with a top mount is to duct air from the front channel it thru the top mount intercooler then have a vent in the bonnet for that air to flow out. you could add a fan to help that airflow at low speed but at say 50kph you'd want to turn the fan off as above that speed it will restrict flow.

it is better than no intercooler but for the time and cost involved you dont get the gains you do from a front mount.

have to agree with stx7 on this. Have done both on the same truck and the diff between the two is like night and day. Also found that they don't actually block up as bad or as quick as i thought. Still have to clean them out but no more than you would with your radiator and don't have to worry bout coolant everywere

yup yup... top mount "interheaters" v front mount will continue to bounce about. However, not everyone can front mount esp when theres two extra trans coolers plumbed in the front.

For exhaust go and see Pete at Papakura mufflers, in Papakura of course.
Does excellent work at very good prices and he is into his Toyota's FJ40's of course.

Thanks guys, This is so helpfull, its just the sort of help and infow I am needing. Keep it coming. I will post what I end up with. I think I will go with a front mount at this stage as I am mostly towing a 6.8 metre caravan on the highway. cheers

where there is a will there is a way, your front bumper should have two opening grille things either side of the number plate - stick one cooler behind each hole, and hey presto FMIC time.......

fine if you want to spend $2500..........

Not all 24 valves have that inlet heater thing, everyone i have spoken to about them, says they aren't needed in NZ's climate anyway. If it is at the manifold end (japan spec) instead of being at the turbo side (euro spec) there is no reason it couldn't be retained under the new manifold inlet pipe.
I have a 24v lined up to be my test bed in a few weeks time.

You dont need it. It just restricts/disrupts the airflow. Pull it out and cut out the fins.

"Holdsworth Automotive" in Parity place, Glenfield (who makes them) will supply you with a top mounted intercooler. "Autobenders" in Manukau will supply a 3" exhaust kit.
These people supplied me for my 1995 L/Cruiser 80 series 24 valve, a couple of years ago and the increase in power and fuel economy was amazing.
The exhaust fitted like a glove. There was no swearing or struggling to make it fit.
I use the 'cruiser' as an every day drive. Around Auckland I get 13 litres to 100k's. On a trip this drops down to 11.5 per 100k's.
Vehicle has just clicked over 310,000.
I also get better mileage out of using 'GULL' diesel than any other brand in NZ.
Gearbox is auto and comes up the Bombays in overdrive at a steady 110 kph.

Sorry, forgot to mention that my bonnet scoop is from a 'Ford Falcon Super Roo Shaker', and is colour coded to the body paint. Looks great.
