have a midmounted runva 9500q high speed. cable to the back thru a pully back to the front. been using steel rope but its time to go too plasma. main reason besides the usual is that pulling the steel rope around the small back pulley is real hard work. So planning on running rope to back pully and thru stainless steel pipe back to the front. space for the pipe is very tight so the smaller the diameter the better.
9mm rope thru 20 or 25mm pipe. what diameter are people using. if the rope breaks and ends up with a splice in it then that needs to pass thru the pipe too so is 20 big enough?.
main question is are the cheaper rope brands on trademe any good? amsteel blue and dyneema seem the cheapest most popular. they are very flexible so tangle easily and dont seem to self align on drum very well. important on rear mount setup. so thinking of spending the extra and getting the DYNEX DUX rope. anybody had experience with it. it appears too have straight centre strands and a braided outer making it stiffer and denser making it stay round on the drum rather than flatten out so makes the next round layer across beside it. thats my hope any way. worried that spliceing will be a proplem. anyone know?. what are the winch challange guys using?
synthetic rope opinions please. pipe diameter size?

Dux 75 IMHO much nicer than dyneema or Amsteel. Lasting a bit better too. You're right, it stays rounder on the drum better. As for the tube question, haven't been there yet so unable to answer.

Re: synthetic rope opinions please. pipe diameter size?
lots of good questions there clive, cant answer them all but I can offer my biassed opinion on some of that stuff, some people may offer different opinions but this is how I see things from what I've picked up along the way, my old 10mm dynex dux overbraid I got as a secondhand handmedown rope about 6 years ago is still going strong, I passed it on to beer cruiser when we did costa 2 years ago thinking it was at the end of its life and I've gone through a few replacement ropes since then while Malc still hasnt managed to break the old overbraid rope yet
most people seem to find those chinese ropes ok but maybe I was just unlucky or something but I tried one of those 10mm runva ropes and broke it 4 times in about 17 winches it was the biggest piece of shit rope I've used I've had stronger shoelaces than what that stuff was
I'm now using 12.5mm amsteel but I've gone too big in diameter I can only get about 25m onto a standard nissan drum (nissan winch on my cruiser
) and I'm left with the remaining rope wrapped off on the horns on the bullbar, it hasnt caught me out yet but I've got to be conscious that I cant winch myself up too close to anything and it bunches up on the side of the drum real quick
, in hindsight I should have stayed at 10mm or 11mm rope you definately get significantly less on the drum when its a couple of mm's bigger. I've always found the stiffer overbraid rope holds its round shape and cuts down through the layers on the drum under load and jams up a lot more than standard rope that tends to flatten out more, all the flash guys seem to have a pretty good routine of spooling the rope back on under tension between winches to minimise the amount the rope cuts down through the layers but I've always been a bit of a bum and never quite got to that clever level
Nurseys a bit of a guru at splicing rope get her to give you a demo at costa next month

I've got 7 mm overbraid dynex dux on a safari, got 40 metres on a pto, same thickness as wire with overbraid.Only broken once, came off the side of a pulley block. Still going strong after 3 years althought overbraid as come off in patches. Does cut down through the layers & gets bloody difficult to pull out.

I use 8mm on the hilux and have never broken it but I don't do winch challenges.
What I was going to say. If you are close to a fishing port with net makers, get it through them because the quality is good and it is a hell of a lot cheaper.
Cheers Richard
