Post by muddyplumber »

Found a pretty cheap set of 36x14.5(but from what I've read they maybe 15.5" wide) mickey Thompson baja belted tires only problem is they have 16.5" centers.... Has anyone seen or no the best place to go,if rims are gonna cost me n arm n a leg I won't bother with them.but just thought I'd try and get as much info as I can

Yep they are round (wouldn't work if they weren't   )

A real bitch to find. Go out to Elite wheels and get some made, this is the fastest and easist option. I fluked some alloy ones when I got the 39.5's, but I wouldn't look at this size tyre again because of the dramas I had.

Sure did. There used to be lots of BFG,s around that were that size, but most of them have been weeded out now I think.

unless the tyres are real cheap i would be careful as once the tyres are dead then getting more tyres to suit your rims may end up being quite a challenge

Dead right, but the wheels are the cheapest part as a rule, so no issues with ditching them when tyres are done

I can see why they've been sitting in this guys shed for ages, rims are the hard bit,can not see it being worth it as the tires are half worn

I noticed this last night, could be worth a shot and see if he will sell the 16.5" set of rims he has separately?

Could be wrong but I think 16.5" rims have a different bead which relies more on pressure to keep it seated? :?

it is the same size that is used by the american army with there humvee's also a good source for tyres (depending on freight)

As for the different bead that will depend on the tyre and rim profile most common for 4wd is the "jj" at the end of the rim code if it is anything different run a search online the profiles are all listed

Yeah your spot on there. Flatmates chev got a hole in the tyre (36x14.5x16.5 Mickey thompsons), it went flat and just fell off the bead  had to use a bead blaster to get it back on. Mate at the tyre shop said the 16.5s were renowned for doing that.
