Terrano airbox - megaflow!

Post by danielbeek »

As part of the slowest build in history, I've started modding the induction, to make it breath easy for a little extra boost and intercooler to be fitted.

First I enlarged the original hole from guard in to engine compartment - the one closest to the washer bottle, not the front one. Removed the straw size plumbing/baffles into, and on the inside of the guard.

I bought a 3"exhaust 2-1 combiner from Chase, and hacked and filed (lots of this!) till it lined up with the factory pipe, and sat flush against canister. This gives way smoother air flow 'transition' into the can due to the flare. Actually sleeves over original pipe off airbox, which is usefull for getting alignment right.

Cut off the factory pipe with grinder, and stitch drilled an undersize hole. Jigsaw would have been good, but blade holder spat the dummy.
Took assembly to local workshop to weld (ahhh, one day...) which they did with a mig, which was a little crude for the thin steel but came out ok.
Photos show result after a little more filing.

Great discovery - Para Rubber sell this rubber trim with gripping jaws lining the inside. Great for lining jagged holes in panel work!

Silicone hose clamped to inlet is a massive 3 or 4" 90 degree unit. Goes in to guard and turns toward mirror. The idea is that a snorkel can later be fitted, run inside guard to just before the door, rather than running whole pipe externally.

Best part is no mucking around moving washer bottle or anything. Seat dyno indicates at least 20hp extra
Does feel like it revs a little more freely, but the downside is that the sucking noise is a bit intrusive in the cabin. Not a nice sound, just a loud dry asmatic gasp. Turbo whistle is a bit more noticable but not too loud at all.
Nothing like a cone filter and alu pipe on a Vtec motor thats for sure.

Will look at sound deading/baffling a bit without choking it off like the factory system. Most of the sound appears to come through the windscreen vents, which after passing through a water trap have an opening straight to the guard by way of a large water drain from the compartment in front of the windscreen.

Very cool, looks slick!
That edge trim cleans up the opening really nice, may have to do that meself.
I like the idea of having a completely sealed airbox too, especially if a snorkel is in the works.
