GQ turbo setup options

Hello ORE,
I'm thinking I haven't got enough hair driers in my life. How many of you are running a TD42 turbo, how have you set it up? intercoolers etc?
I'm doing some research to turbo mine but have heard mixed opinions on how to set them up. So a pic/description and opinion of your setups would be awesome, budget is about $1500 completed.
Any recommended shops in Wellington for doing some of the work?
Cheese,
Adam.

Pretty sure everyone's waiting for someone to say "search" an you shall find

it's been done to death on here an oz sites like patrol4x4
To be honest I don't think your $1500 budget will go very far even if you do everything your self

do some searching on this website before buying anything, this has been covered a lot. There is a lot of feedback and info about that kit you have posted so do your home work. Caveat emptor.
IMHO you will not do it for 1500 even if you build it yourself. I'd put my money on having to replace your clutch as well.

did my system myself.
Made a j pipe out 40mm steam pipe and bends $40
Second hand tdo5h plus rebuild kit $350
Oil feed hose and fittings $85
3in exhaust(no muffler)plus mandrel bends $250
Vairous flanges and gaskets $100
Crossover pipe and silicone hoses and clamps $30
nissan intercooler $25
flexy $50
Clutch(heavy duty) $450
Misc $100
Total $1480
this was all done with the basic of tools and lots of my time.
So if your getting someone to do it then add alot more $$$
Heres a pic. Looks rough but was very reliable and did the job real well.

I bought a LWB with the offroader kit fitted, the manifold is identical to a locally made one, the turbo i have been told not to go over the stock 7psi boost as they are a little weak in the bearing dept, but overall bloody happy with the way it runs, even with 33"s its a huge step up from a non turbo shorty on 31"s

if you spend the same money on a 2nd hand tdo5 and a rebuild kit as you do on one of those scarles turbos you'd be very impressed with the difference. Can up the boost to 15psi(Which imho every turbo td42 should be at min). Also get some reliability to go with it. Then watch it come alive

TD05 with what size wheel, 16g or 20g ?? TD05 or TD05H ?

Would only want a 16g unless you plan on getting the pump modded.

without bigger plunger etc then can only really use the tod05 16g small wheel. You can run the big wheel 16g but without boost comp there would be a heap of black smoke and high egts while its building boost and it would have a bit of lag.
The 16g small wheels i've used on various setups have always reached full boost by 1900rpm max. normally around the 1700 mark.
Mate thought he'd be clever and put a 18g wheel one in and what a joke. full boost at 2700 under full load. and took ages to get there.
I'd monster him everytime we had a match off.

They all would. Yours is a tdo5h. It just means the have different turbine/compressor shapes. maybe also different bearings ie thrust or ball bearings.
Have found the tdo5h gives the best pull through the rev range

Righto guys.. got a pyro fitted post turbo, not ideal but was the easiest place to fit it, pump turned up a bit, still dont see any smoke, full boost is around 2000rpm boost is set at 8 psi. pyro gets upto 480c going up steepish long hill, what to do to cool it down a bit...and yes i know i should do the 12mm plunger bit and anaroid, these will happen as funds allow

with your kind setup an aniroid or bigger plunger isn't nessacary.
To lower the egts you can either wind up the boost or lessen the fuel. Personally i'd do the latter with the type of turbo you have.
Fyi you only need the bigger plunger when your standard pump has been or will be maxed out.
A pump aniroid only limits the off boost fuel so gain if theres not much smoke off boost then i wouldn't worry bout it either

May try winding up the boost to 10 or 12 psi..if that fails i will wind the fuel back a tad, unfortunately i have no idea how much it has been turned up as it was fitted prior to my purchase, from memory shortening the rod ups the boost ?

Winding up the rod puts more pretension on the wastegate, more pretension does increase the boost level a bit but make sure you still have full travel of the wastegate lever so you dont spike or overboost

Good point, I turned the fuel back a wee bit this morning, egt's look to have come back a little also, hard to say as it was a colder morning, not sure i really want to up the boost on the "scarles" turbo, untill i get the turbo internals upgraded

Cheese,

Plan on spending a bit more than $1500, here is my setup so far

Manifold from Sinco customs (
http://www.sinco.co.nz) $900+gst
Turbo from Scarles SCR320 model (
http://www.scarles.co.nz) $600ish
Oil feed line $100
Oil Return line $50 ish, $20 weld on fitting to sump, $30 sump gasket
Air filter $70ish
Cross over pipe handmade $0
Silicon hose $30
Dump pipe, handmade, no exhaust yet......
This is what I'm running so far
So this setup, assuming you reuse your exhaust gaskets, have a mate to weld on the fitting to your sump, dont run a pyro guage or boost guage and connect to your existing exhuast system $1800 - $1900
The extras but not essential that I have installed or yet to install are, Boost Guage $50, Pyro Guage $130, Water to air intercooler $220, pump for cooler $150, Water to air intercooler radiator $70, 3"exhuast system $200ish
I reckon I will have spent around the $3000 mark by the time I am happy

Got a gasket from Appco, i'm changing the sump over today.
Gregorys manual says to use 'jointing compound' on both sides of the new gasket before fixing in place.
Thats thrown me...do I need that stuff and what is it pls??

Just a sealant like 'Gasket Goo'

Cool, i'll start putting it back together, was pleased to see no sludge whatsoever in the sump!
How long should I leave it before starting it? Suppose that depends on the sealant used.

Don't you be saying things like 'correct order'

Book just said progressively so I nipped them up in an alternate even pattern, then tightened them up as per how they felt when undoing them. Bible said 6-7Nm but my torque wrenches start off at 15-19 or so. Filled it up with oil and i'll let it sit overnight before starting it tomorrow.
Finally got my first beer down ma throat
