TigerZ11 2 speed winch free spool/rebuild

Hi folks

Just pulled down my 9000lb 2 speed winch apart after about 2 years with maybe a dozen wet muddy pulls on my surf and dragging logs - all sorts of stuff. Hasn't missed a beat apart from some initial teething troubles which Brett sorted out right at the start.
With help from an aussie forum and a diagram from a member of aulro forums I completely stripped the 2 speed gearbox apart - not too hard really once you've seen some pics!
Well I'm very impressed - there is NOT a DROP of water in the gearbox. Cleaned all the cheap grease (and moly additive that I squeezed in) out of it and regreased sparingly with a moly grease. The main reason I pulled it to bits was the freespool has always been a biartch with it and lately I have to brace a foot against the bar to pull it out it's that hard.
Well it's better now but still very hard to freespool. There's no damage inside, or gears rubbing on housings or anything like that. The freespool engagement seems to be working fine inside.

Do I fill the bugger with oil instead of grease? I suspect not. One thing that has been suggested to me is to use INOX-8 grease, which I haven't tried yet. Is it less tacky or something?
Any ideas?

I got a Tigerz11 10000lb Winch a couple of years back too. Had no troubles with it. Like yours, my freespool was farkin hard to pull out, where as other friends could pull theres out with their little finger. Anyhow, Brett sorted it for me, I beleive it was just a grease change (Inox .......really easy freespool ever since......

I too am about to pull mine apart and give it some TLC.....

had similar issues with my runva. Found it was the brake not releasing and dragging on the drum.
Originally though it was the drum. claened everything up. use good moly grease and all that,put it together and same probs still.
Pulled the brake out cleaned everything up with brake clean and now it falls off the drum

These winches have the brake in the motor, and I am just using the gearbox side of it with the drum in for now. I think it's just the way the mechanism works really, unfortunately most of the gear train remains connected to the drum in freespool and only the first stage is disconnected. Be interested to hear from more INOX-8 users!

Hi Guys
I am a big fan of Inox grease and that is what I run in my winch. I told Brett tha,t that was the greese I was going to run in my winch regardless of what sort it came out with as i have used it for a few years and have seen the results of its use, so know it is good shit. It does not congeal and seperate like other brands and it leaves a sticky film over everything it touchs. It mixes with water and still retains its lubrucateing abilities. I even run it in my front hubs and my CVs are always sticky.

Well I ended up using Castrol MP grease which has a bit of Moly in it but not too sticky. Also my tube seems to be going a bit liquid which is fine too.

Freespool is OK, certainly not a "free" spool but certainly much better than it was. i can pull it out on a steep muddy slope now, which was the idea.

I used the grease sparingly which may have helped.

I also pulled the motor out, again not a DROP of water!! and resealed with gasket goo. However I don't advise this as it doesn't really need doing unless you're paranoid about water in the motor as the brushes are a prick to get back on the rotor.

So, I know how to strip these 2 speed boxes if anyone needs photos or help!

Also, I found out how the torque limiter works. It seems from the manual that you turn clockwise to raise it and antiCW to lower it but in fact there is a loose/easy spot in the middle that is the minimum setting and about a quarter turn to EACH SIDE to set the maximum (clamps 2 clutch plates onto a ring gear). Quite like the setup but still haven't managed to get it to slip! Which means the surf hasn't been stuck enough....

freespool is aways a little hard on the tiger winch, as the seal on the drum are a tight fit.
have one on our winch truck and gets easier with a lot of winching,but still this is what keeps them sealed so well.

I agree, great support and a good winch. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Never seems to get hot, included main on/off switch is a big plus. (new) thompson solenoid is the bizzo and I've got the remote wired up under the dash to keep it dry plus a winch dash switch, so no need to use the handheld controller any more with all that! Just for backup.
I disagree about the seals being the issue though - I did all my tests with the motor not attached so no clamping force on the seals. I also have the double lip seals supplied by Brett and with a bit of grease on them I don't think they hinder the drum rotation at all! At least not on mine.
Oh, nice sealed bearings in the motor section too.

Anyway, it is all good now and I am happy again!
