Series II TD5 Disco - The Brick.

I used to have 4WDs... some of you probably even remember them... it seems like a long time ago.

More recently I had a Holden... I liked it. But my Holden was getting on, and my family just doubled in size - and my Wife wants to go 4WDing and do family picnics up the rivers and beaches that Canterbury has in abundance... and so the replacement Holden I had lined up went on the backburner.

I like a challenge, so against all advice I test drove, and really liked, an early Disco II TD5. Its rattly, clunky, slow (compared to other diesel engined 4WDs of its era), and if the internet is to be believed it will have all the traditional Land Rover faults like oil leaks, drooping headlinings and electrical failures.

Its got all the things that should have been a warning to me (given where they are made) - ABS, traction control, active stability control, airbags and it was made in Solihull. But it drove nicely and it has three good seats in the back for the girls, reasonable luggage space for the dog... and luggage, good tyres, great economy and its a truck I haven't owned yet (although I had a SIIa way back when I was young).

Anyway, I bought it - and my daughter decided to name it based on what it looks like (and my take on that is that it has a similar shape, similar colour, similar aerodynamic qualities and similar reliability when used in Canterbury). Its now called "Brick".

Of course, I'm not very good at just buying a vehicle and driving it - so I thought I'd throw this thread up just so I'd have somewhere to document what I do to it. If you're thinking, "Awesome, last time it was a MU and that was months and months of mods and tech" then I'm sorry to disappoint you but I can't afford to do much to it (actually I can't afford to do anything to it at all) so things will be slow, steady and budget-conscious). After 3 1/2 years of studying at uni things are a little tight.

So, watch this space (if you're at all interested) while I learn what I can do with one of these... and then do it if I can afford it :mrgreen:

I'm in the same boat these days too..had an inheritance, dreamed about trying to build a HiMUzulux, bought a safari money pit, couldnt keep it on the road, family got bigger so SWB truck was just no fun putting car seats in, so swapped it for a near standard old double cab Lux which I also can't afford to do much too except I did get it with a nice shortened offroad deck and mud tyres so can't complain it can still get dirty

That shouldn't be necessary - Discos are live-axles on coils (well, mine has airbags in the back - but they ride nicely so they can stay for now) :)

Maybe I spoke too soon...

Its seems these trucks have 3.54 ratio diffs - and if I work on 0.1 difference in ratio roughly equating to 1" in tyre difference while keeping the gearing similar then I can get 40" tyres by fitting Hilux axles with 4.5 ratio diffs! : )

Even 37" tyres with 4.3 diffs would probably do me... so maybe I shouldn't be greedy :mrgreen:

Ahh excellent..didn't realise the discos still had solid axles at both ends, thats a start at least :P I even contemplated one of these or a classic range rover vogue when I was looking at a new truck..nothing happened to pop up at the right time in the right place tho

First bit of tech - a free diff lock! (nearly) :mrgreen:

Series 1 Discos had full-time 4WD and a centre diff lock built into the transfer case. Awesome... but when they made the Series 2 they included fancy bits like traction control, active stability control etc... and (in my largely cynical view of things) they probably thought anyone who could afford such luxury probably wouldn't know what a centre diff lock was, let alone how to use one...

I suspect they had a big pile of left-over transfer cases from Series 1 Discos laying about - and the new Disco 2 must have been a great place to use them up - because my Disco has the centre diff lock built into it - its just not plumbed up! YAY!

A little reading later, I figured out I could bolt a D1 lever straight in, or I could buy a 255GBP lever assy to replace mine (thats over $500NZ + freight!), or I could rustle up something custom. The D1 lever seemed like the best option - and there was one locally for $50 - and it was Fathers Day! :)

So - apart came the dash and in went the lever assy to test the fit - perfect

But the hi-low selection needed a small bracket fabricated up to make it work (the lever out of the TC is different to the D1 one):

And because the D2 lever assy bolts to the main cover plate in the transmission tunnel, while the D1 lever bolts to the transfer case, I needed to modify the cover plate:

Then I put it all back together. Its NOT a bolt-in quick fix, but it all works. Yay! Free diff lock! I'm pretty happy about that...

...but I'm not actually happy with the finished product for one important reason: Vibration.

What I think is happening is the cable from the main shifter is sitting against the D1's TC lever assy and the vibration coming up from the transmission, through the cable and into the shifter can be felt really badly in the shift handle, and to a lesser extent right through the centre console.

It was really noticeable because I had a torch hanging on a hook on the side of the console before and it never rattled - now it rattles so badly I've had to put it elsewhere.

So my plan is to fabricate bracketry for an electric actuator using a window regulator and then I can remove the D1 lever assy and go back to the original cable-driven high-low lever - this should remove all the vibration again and give me a switch-driven difflock... but thats a job for another day... for now at least I have it working... which I will need, since there is some slop in the front driveshaft - that will be the next job... or one of them :) (being able to lock the diff-lock means I can remove the front shaft but still drive the truck)

wicked aweshum steve... theyre great vehicles for practicality and economy huh chap? i lurves mine for comfort and towing duties, ace and rear auto airbags and being the 7 seater option, is great for the horde. plenty of other kickin attributes i appreciate on the disco too, but thats enough waffling.

interesting tech on the centre difflock chap.. make sure ya chuck 'centre' in, peeps will get confuzzed.. lol. i'm tryin to stay away from moddin my td5 otherwise it means i can pedal it..

Yep - Chch to Dunedin, all around town for the weekend, up through Central Otago and back out to Oamaru towing a big-arse full trailer all on 3/4 of a tank. Happy with that :) I want more seats, but I'll have to wait till I have money again...

Thats what 3 1/2 years of uni gets you, lol... I fixed it, now only the Americans will get confuzzled... :mrgreen:

Cool steve , im alway keen for a quiet bbq drive in my stock standard bighorn ( i can hear you laughing), prob need to keep it that way as im looking at finally changing jobs and may not have the company car anymore.

Sounds like the days of simexs and rooster tails are gone for both of us (short term at least anyway) but still keen for a few social days.

Who's laughing? I *like* Isuzus... I just don't like fixing them :mrgreen:

And yeah - I considered putting a set of 36" Simexes on the Disco... briefly... very briefly :)

Family-style BBQ trips it is for me for the foreseeable future... and I'm ok with that. Its a step in the right direction :)
