Land Anchors? Ground Anchors?

Post by Steve-greenwood »

Just wondering peoples thoughts to Ground anchors are some good some not? I have been looking on trade me and 4wdbits they seem to range from $100 to $1000 not worried about how small they fold up or how light they are just one that works and is not going to break the bank balance.

Cheers

A guy in our club makes and sells the lancor ground anchor and have seen it in action and was impressed with it, well worth a look.

those lancors probably work really well but personaly I wouldnt piss about with something you have to screw into the ground I could see all sorts of limitations with rocks and tree roots and hard ground :? . I dont use ground anchors much but I've got a couple of old firmagrip copies (spade ground anchors) and they work fine, limitations are they can pull out in soft ground but most ground anchors will do that anyway and you need someone to set the anchor for you while you apply load onto it, so long as they are built with the right geometry they dig into the ground fine under load and usually not much of a problem to pull them back out

Do you think the firmagrip style anchors would work with a manual winch aswell?

There is a lot of thought to put into making one.. the angles are very critical + the length's from spade to hook.. Even the size of spade has a huge impact on how it works.. bigger in this case is not always best.. I've got a hughes copy when I repair it I can measure it so you can get it right..? mine is twisted from the antics of not having a rear rope to pull it out.. and I just keep re setting the bloody thing in the end had to dig it out.. but by then it was bent and didnt set right after that..

both of mine are down at towbars workshop and I wont get them back till after Taz has done Manakau at the end of the month then I can give them a measure up to compare lengths and angles with others, both of mine were built by different people but the angle between the spade and the main arm seems to be identical between them. I used the red one at the costa teams event in 2010 with beercruiser and the yellow one at this years event and they both seemed to bite into the ground no probs :D , the guys that borrowed the red one last month broke the spade off but thats a we mod that was done to it thats gone back to be fixed under waranty.... aye Taz Image

heres couple of vids we got winching off it at this years costa event

Using Saddam's pic

The angles between components are slightly different but the angle between blade and main "spine" are 8 degrees on both.

I brought my anchor off Craig Belamy. He was making them at the time. The only 2 mods I had done was replacing the mild steel blade with a 10mm bisalloy one and had gussets added to give it more strength.
After bending and breaking others, in my opinion, this land anchor is the anchor from HELL!!

Here it is in action.

(to see it really working, skip it to about 1 minute)
