Auckland area

Post by tops »

Sorry if this is a topic that's done to death. I've had a good look through the forum for ideas of where to wheel around Auckland and haven't found much. I've just moved over from Aussie and not very familiar with where to go. I've done Woodhill Jeep Park a few times now and wondered if there was anywhere else . I'm not too interested in beach driving which I understand is our Murawai way as I've done loads of this back home. I've heard of a place called the rifle range or something but can't find anything about it online.

Is there somewhere you can go for a day's driving in the bush. Looking for moderate to challenging tracks much like Woodhill offers but without the $50 pricetag

Any suggestions/map links would be awesome.

Also keen to meet other wheelers so if ya planning a trip around Auckland area give me a shout!

Cheers,

Not to much in the Auckland area unmless you gain private land access somehow. This is where Clubs can be good.

Otherwise Woodhill 4x4 Park is the best fun around followed by Muriwai. Some clubs go into Waiuku Forest (South), but to be honest, its the same terrain as Woodhill but not as good if you ask me.

A little further afield you can go to Thompsons Track or Maratoto Track in the Coromandel (2hrs). Thompsons is a good one, Te Aroha side to the summit is fun for all. The other side down to Katikati is serious stuff and only a group of well kitted trucks should attempt this.

Pureora Forrest in the central Nth Island is a good place to I hear, much like Woodhill without the pricetag as you say, but you will spend $50 bucks on gas at least to get there.....

Hope this helps......

Yeah, thanks for the info. Is murawai just beach driving or are there some good tracks to enjoy? I like the look of Waiuku Forest. Is it possible just to drive out there and find some tracks or do you need to obtain clearance/keys/be on a club run?

Reckon I'll join a club also. Cheers.
