Shorty recovery rope

Post by tycho »

After a few trips where a short recovery (no snatch) rope would have been useful to get someone quickly moving again I had a plan. Got some 12mm Dynamica rope for $9.99 per m off Trademe. This stuff is rated to a breaking strain over 16000kg. Starting with a 5m length I spliced in a stainless thimble (from Cooks) at each end and ended up just over 4m long. The thimbles fit nicely on a recovery hook and I reckon this will be just the trick for those tight spots where a little persuasion is all that is needed, super light and easy to stow. Total cost just over $70. Will still keep the trusty ARB snatch strap on the back for the more serious recoveries :)

Wouldn't want to do a snatch recovery with that - not a lot of stretch in a winch rope, but as you say, if you just want a light tug and a rope that packs away small.

a winch rope should have no stretch at all.

And yes, that dynamic should only be used for light pulls, not snatching or tugging.

by the time you have done that it would be easier just to go into cookes and order a 4 mtr stretchy and that way if you need to more persuasive you can with no fear of having the tow conection parting company witrh the vehicle

Yeah definately won't be snatching with it, thought I'd made that clear in my first post. Purposefully wanted no stretch so if something did come adrift less propulsion :). This thing packs up small and is quicker to stow than my snatch strap which always seems to be twisted :). Only problem may be abrasion but will keep an eye on that or sort out some protective wrap etc.
