Torque converter lock up

If anyone has read the latest Modified 4x4 Mag there is an article on how to lock the torque converter to a fixed ratio. The example they show you is for a GQ or GU patrol. (a good read)

Anyway, my question is related but for the Terrano.

In mine, it has a trans switch that can be set to Hold, Performance/Sport or Normal. I've tried hold, but not exactly sure what I should be expecting.
Can I manually lock the convertor and have it stay in this ratio no matter what I do?

Cheers

Just beware, a torque converter lock clutch is not designed to take large loads.... They are designed for when you are upto speed to lock up.
People have tried using them for say hill descents and get engine braking like a manual..With mixed results...
If you blow that clutch it will go thru the auto and trash it...

Exactly, the remainder of the article goes on to talk about this. Basically it should only be locked at speed. Not at a standstill.

Here is the article if anyone is interested.......

just having a quick read, looks like they havn't mentioned you need to unlock the clutch when the auto goes to change gear.
there are/was some kits that would automatically do that for you.

Yeah, but the idea is to keep it in that gear without changing.

Been trying to think why you would want to start off in 2nd...Can't think of a good reason. An odd Nissan idea???

Yeah, but the idea is to keep it in that gear without changing.

i don't think that mod does that. it just enables the clutch in any gear instead of top gear only.

The power/hold switch changes the rpm at which the gears are changed. Power changes the gear at a higher rpm.
Hold changes at a lower rpm and disables the kickdown

hold in other nissans like my laurel is a snow button hold in mazdas holds it in particular ratios, taking off in second allows you to reduce the chance off breaking traction in the snow if driven appropriately being made in japan they get a fair bit of snow/ice.
