what do, exhaust for my vx80, 4"?

Post by mumbls »

Hello

Currently I have my wagon booked in for a 3" exhaust ont he 25th September, today I have learned that I have a 2.75" exhaust on it already.

Obviously my guesstimating 2.25-2.5 was qutie off, now i am hesitant to part with cash for the labor involved with installing a 3" when I already have a 2.75".

So now I have the decision, what do, go for 3.5" straight off the turbo - or if doing 3.5" why settle for that an go straight truck style an try fit a 4" exhaust?

Anyone and everyones opinion is welcomed, what should I do? I have just had a intercooler fitted and had pump serviced and injectors done, is it worth going bigger or shall i settle for 2.75"

Thoughts an experience...

3.5" is waayyy too big for a 1hdt. Just go 3" from the turbo back esp if you've only got the factory churbro. It'll be an expensive exercise to get that size pipe and then esp to install it. Where the exhaust goes over the xmember at the back between the body and the chassis 3" only just squeezes in anyway.

Ive only got 3" on mine with a bigass turbo on it and its more than sufficient.

With a turbo the pipe cannot be too big. But there are diminishing returns. I doubt you'll gain much with a larger than 3" pipe unless it's making big hp and rpm.

use the money you had set aside for the 3 inch exhaust to buy a water/alcohol injection system or an intercooler if you dont already have one.

both of those will gain considerable HP and Torque over gaining a fractionally larger exhaust

hoping to get a turbo made an sent over by a guru on Ih8mud which is a ct26/supra/+secret squirrel on what he actually does but the dyno figures, real world peoples reviews seem pretty good to very good.
oh an it will be runnign 24psi

with that in mind, would you go to a 3"? or is 2.75 sufficient
an then there is the $1000 to go from 21.9cm2 to 23.96cm2 ?

Yea Ive heard good things about those gturbo's. Ive got a dsr430 on mine but wouldn't do it again as its really not matched that well to the engine (despite what dsr has said about them). Bigger turbs definitely help, mines currently only on 15psi and it eats most 1hd's for breakfast.

Id say 2.75" would be ample for the application, however there will probably be quite a few other restrictions in your current system (such as mufflers etc) that would benefit from a free flow set up, in which case if you're doing them you may aswell throw a 3" the whole way through on

I currently have a 200mm muffler to keep police and warrant man happy

It is more for looks than muffling anything

I will be keeping a token muffler on what ever I do just to avoid the hassle of over zealous cops

This is something I'm working on at the moment, going inside the chassis next to the gearbox, 3" is tight but i'll make it work ... the factory cast elbow is terrible.

may be worth a look but autobend do a bolt on 3" exhaust for the 80, they may do dump pipes but you may have to get one made.

I had one on my 90 series (playdoh) and it made it run so much better
