Re: Winchs
Rope is heaps safer and easier to use than wire, bit expensive but it's worth it.
Re: Winchs
Cool and no disadvantage?
Re: Winchs
the runva ones seem ok for the price www.winch.co.nz and mike is good to deal with, with anything the winches may need regular maintenence and the synthetic stuff likes to be kep clean
worth doing a search on here for runva and wire vs rope

Re: Winchs
I would second Runva with the Dyneema rope, I have just brought one myself.

Not as bulletproof as wire rope, won't like being dragged over rocks.

Re: Winchs
synthetic rope is good if you winch your self as the truck moves and not the rope were as if you winch others alot the rope is being dragged over stuff(which synthetic doesn't like) and your truck is stationary.
X3 on the runva. 9500lb one would be ample for you

Re: Winchs
After doing lots of research myself, I am going to avoid synthetic rope for now. At least until the technology advances a bit more and it doesn't really suit my purposes.
Synthetic rope is really for competition guys to provide much easier handling. You have to really look after it as it will degrade quickly. Even our strong UV will start to kill it, and its too expensive to keep replacing.
Steel has been around for a long time and can take more abuse. It does need looking after like cleaning and re-spooling.
Just work safely with the steel as it will cause more damage if it breaks.

See September issue of NZ4WD for my thoughts on synthetic verses Wire cable.
