Hey in my 1989 ln130 surf when I take off it pops out of first gear if I don't hold my hand on the gear stick, any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks
Sam

detent ball at the top of the gearbox needs replacing, you can get a kit for this cheap apparantly, otherwise it could be worn syncro gears

The bulkhead ring in the gearbox is probably quite worn, or the selector pins have worn on the shaft and aren't engaging first gear enough. Bad news is it will probably have to come apart to fix it, so easy way is to just hold the lever in gear while you're in first, It wont wreck anything in the short term.
On second though, you haven't done a bodylift and it is hitting the body?

Mine did the same, was the plastic ring that the gear lever runs in on the top of the gear box, $20 for a new one and about an hour to change from the top.
be worth a look as easy to access don't even have to drop the oil.

had that happen to the H55F in my 70 series cruiser when I first brought it it would pop out of every gear unless you held the gear lever in place

, replaced the nylon bush and 10 years later the gearbox is still sweet as

Very common on hilux's and surf's. Lineside in chch can do kits for it. Is a new nylon seat and rubber ring. pull gear lever mounting flange from the top of box (4 bolts from memory) there is a spring loaded retainer that needs a half turn then it all pulls out. old gear off, new on and fit as a reverse of removal. Think it was called a shifter seat. cost me $20.
