Whatipu through to Karekare beach access

Planning a trip for labour weekend, can anyone tell me the following:
Can I get right through to the beach at Whatipu, visit the sea cave, head up the beach and exit at Karekare??
WAMS says I can:

you used to be able to get out onto the beach at Whatipu , but when I last took the LJ out there for a spin it is know gated
. Locals muttered something about nesting bird eggs .
Interesting that the road continues through what is considered a private camping area .
Off to have a look on google maps

Hmmmm.
Was the gate locked?? Might have to go armed with the Camera, GPS and a WAMS map
Thought it might be a fun detour on the way up to Poutu

Unfortunately that legal road is a definite challenge as it heads into some serious wetland after negotiating a rocky bluff.. and that's just the first 500m.
