TD42 turbo question

I have a turbo conversion done on my TD42, offroader kit, using SCR320 turbo
pump wound up a little...pyro fitted post turbo and around 9 psi ( not ideal i know), question is full boost is around 2-2200 rpm, not intercooled, i dont see any visible smoke and driving up the kaimai's EGT's are around 480 mark, did get up to 550 on the waikato side, is this an ideal setting ??..Feels okay to drive...LWB high roof with 33's..cruising at 100 egt's are under 300 as gauge starts at 300 and sits around 5 psi

Depends what you want out of it? For me it wouldn't be I'd be aiming for 18-20psi and 600-650 egt, intercooled, and boost compensator on pump. But thats just me and I don't know how reliable and limits of the offroader stuff.

550 post turbo is about right, maybe a little high if your have the weak piston TD42. i would wind up the boost a little more to 10-12lb if its the weak one.
maybe drop the fuel down a tad.
patrol forum has the exact details on what they will handle. it all depends on which version TD42 you have.

Will end up getting my turbo rebuilt with garrett internals, Cgad at bay turbo was great with info...but finding someone who does not charge like a wounded bull to fit a boost compensator is the hard bit.

Very similar setup as mine, SCR320 but sinco customs headers, might pay to bump your boost up to around 14 - 15psi, you will notice a definate drop in EGT's, My SWB is on 33" bighorns, I'm running my air filter straight off the turbo so its getting not so cold air, half a turn on the fuel pump and 15psi, I can tow my 20ft boat up coromandel hills with egts maxing out around 550 degrees, cruising 100km/hr its around 7psi, I make full boost around 1900 - 2000rpm but do run a boost controller which holds the wastegate closed untill its up till 12psi then starts controlling, you will find with standard turbo actuators that they start to open a little bit as the boost builds

DieselBoy posted up a bit of a how to in a thread somewhere. Used the top half of a td27t pump? Been meaning to do it to mine :roll:

Even if you can only do half you're saving on labour

to me if your not running big power(heaps of fuel and boost) then you don't really need a compensator. all they do is restrict to fuel untill the turbo starts to boost. My last turbo shorty was at 1bar and had from memory 3/4 -1 turn on the fuel screw. It did smoke a bit but only till it was at half boost which came on at 1500rpm. then it run clear.

As tweake said 550deg post turbo is about as far as you want to go egt wise. What you've described sound like its running at a fairly good level. If you're wanting to drop the egts a bit then put an intercooler in the system and up the boost a bit.
Fyi there is about 150-200 deg diff between pre and post turbo temps and pistons like to melt around the 650-700degmark(measured pre turbo
)
