was wondering is it legal too exit the exhaust in front of the rear wheel ? as it would be a hell of a lot easier then dragging it over the diff ?

my wof guy does not have problem with it, my drops just in front of diff, and its a 4 door safari

i think it has to exit behind any passanger seats

the exhaust must exit 300mm behind the last rear passenger compartment opening and not be any more the 92 DB and must not protrude out side the line of the body.

Easiest thing to do would be to ask your WOF man.
Ultimately its up to him in the end.

My WOF guy doesnt have an issue with mine which exits just in front of rear wheel

Would that meen on a 5 door vehicle it has to exit 150mm from the back, cause technically the 'boot' is part of the passenger compartment.

i suppose it comes down to who checks it over.

It's a grey area...as a SUV would be ruled out as the entire body is open to the passengers. A two door coupe such as a nissan skyline can have a side dump. yet a four door cannot as the climate (zone control) on the rear parcel tray of some models circulates air via the boot. and yet it is sealed from the boot compartment...(go figure) Basically. anything that isn't a single cab ute would technically a Wof fail with a side dump.

Exhaust side pipes:

NZTA regulations state: "An exhaust system must be designed, constructed, positioned and maintained in a way that minimises the risk of heat or fumes emitted from the system harming the vehicle’s occupants."

The LVV requirements provide more guidance:
An exhaust system fitted to a low volume vehicle must be positioned so that it terminates in a position where the outer end of the exhaust pipe is not directly underneath the passenger compartment.

This allows an exhaust to end under the sealed boot floor of a sedan, tailpipe angled downwards; it does not have to protrude out beyond the rear of the bumper.

Cobra and Lotus 7 replicas are built with side pipes which are as long as possible so that they exit just in front of the rear wheels. This design can be used on other vehicle types, as long as the exhaust exits just in front of the rear wheel. This is so that fumes can't rise up and enter an open window.

Externally vented wastegates must also follow this requirement, ideally exiting as far rearward as possible, not in the engine bay or out of a front guard.

If the exhaust does exit from teh side, any sections of exposed exhaust adjacent to points of occupant entry and exit must be adequately heat-shielded, to prevent burn injuries.

correct me if i'm wrong, but if you have a SWB safari and replaced the sliding rear windows with solid fixed glass pane could you almost get away with it infront of the rear tyre out exhausting out to the side? (it would be pushing 150mm depending on where its mounted).

I was refering to a SWB model - 2 dr. But I think there's not enough room to exit before the rear wheel and be clear enough of the passenger door.
