Diff locks: Front Vs Rear

Post by DaveM »

Ok, I've got the chance to buy a complete rear factory locker for the safari for $1000, or I can go for the front auto locker, which installed will be $800-900, plus the cost of manual hubs ($300), so theres not much in it.

Which would give the greater benefit, a front or rear difflock? I'm running a LSD in the rear, which is probably due for an overhaul.

Any comments?

There in lies your awnser Dave. If you put it in the front you only have to fix the lsd or replace with locker. Saying that though, I am toying with the idea of front locker and rear lsd. I think the trick is to work out which end (if any) you mostly loose traction on. For me it's the front, that may be because of ifs though.

You will get 80% effectivenes from having a locker in the back, and 20% in the front.

Think about where the weight transfer goes when climbing, (which is usually when you require the full effectiveness of a locker) the bulk of the pressure goes to the back wheels. Having the front locked as well is just the icing on the cake.

The other thing is the immense pressure put on cv's when front only lockers are used. I know your'e in a GQ, but they can, and do bust cv's as well, just not as readily as others, (and trust when a GQ cv breaks, it is an expensive exersise to rectify)

If I was in your shoes I'd clean up the LSD and if you can?(I know you can do this with beam axle Toyotas, don't know about Nissans) put it in the front, and put the locker in the rear.

Was leaning towards the rear locker, as they are harder to come by too, so if it looks ok, I'll take it, I may even stretch the budget and get a front lokka too, asnd just hold off on the 35's

You need to scrutinise factory lockers very closly, it is difficult to see the worn dogs as they are shielded on the wearing portion but they wear and then they jump out of mesh under load. As GQTROL will testify building up the corners doesn't last. If you have a good one you need to ensure full engagement before appling power. They are slow acting because of only vaccum actuation

go for a arb locker in the rear, then when you can afford it go for 1 in the front. they are $1250 +gst. i had a factory vacuum locker that i was going to fit but after talking to people i sold it and went for arb air lockers. if your diff needs work then its a good time to fit a locker.

DaveM we have had a factory locker in our shorty for around 5 years now and it hasnt misses a beat always engaged and dis-engages straight away, ill be running one it the back of mine aswell as i scored one with a wreck. You get good ones and bad ones. But if you can get an ARB for $1250 got for that.

 I have factory lockers front and rear in my 88 cruiser and have found that I don't like using the front locker when climbing steep crumbly or slipery slopes - if the front wheels start to slide - having them locked in seems to make the slide worse and you have no steering - whereas with them unlocked - the up hill wheel will be spinning and the down hill will be stopped with the side wall acting as a bit of an anchor.

8) I have a lock right in the front and LSD in the rear.

Like many others, i just can't justify $1400 on an ARB locker, but will happily spend $2000+ on a set of tyres.

Afterall, with out ground clearence, you ain't going no where!!!! 8) 8)

If you do alot of river work, then a front locker may be the go, as it may aid in pulling the vehicle up the bank out of the river.

I don't know about your's Dave, but my Safari always lifts the rear wheels before the front. Must the boat anchor infront of dash board.

Hi Dave ,

If you're in the Marlborough club have an ask around there , Mike Holmes would be able to answer this for you .

it deprends what you are going to do with the truck as well, are you going to keep it forever or are you going to upgrade? i put front and rear air lockers in because i got my turbo cheap, and i dont regret it at all. but i wont be selling the truck any time soon, its almost finished, bar work to go.

Well, the deals all but done.
Paying more than I'd like, but at least its local so I can get all the wiring, switches etc, and don't have to pay for freight.

This Safari is also running an exhaust brake, worth putting in for those steep descents?
