Whats the best suspension for me?

Post by Garrick »

I have a LN106 Hilux and have joined the local 4WD club and have noticed my suspension is tight n has no twist what so ever. I have noticed that its got after market leaf springs in the front. Its got awesome handling on the open road but am thinking about changing it and turning it into more of an off road truck. Any suggestions, ive been doing research and found people using ford falcon, newer hilux, etc all i want to know is whats the best for me. I dont mind chopping and welding all i want is to be two inches higher and have awesome flex

Hi Garrick
The first thing you want to do is disconnect any swaybars when you head offoad.
The difference in articulation is unbelieveable!
Obviously a little suspension lift can do wonders, but I would first look at a bodylift. This will result in keeping the overall centre of gravity low while increasing ground clearance under the gearbox, as well as improve approach and departure angles.
I hope this is of some value - and good luck with all your mods.

how does a body lift increase clearance under gearbox, i would of thought the only way to increase your ground clearance was larger tyres and spring lift. body lift only lifts the body so gearbox clearance doesnt change

Well, not unless you lifted the gearbox the same amount as the body.

That would be called a gbox lift. The only way a body lift will give you more clearance between gbox and ground, is when its on its lid
If you break it... build it stronger.

that is very true kbjj lol,

But it depends what you want from it, softer supension will flex more, but when your sideways on a hill it will also make you roll more too, removing the sway bars will help a bit though.

if you want an easy way to get more flex, i beleive you can take one leaf out (dont know which one, coil man myself) but this does decrease the life of the springs.

if you want a realitivly cheap way of doing it, taking a leaf out, and putting the axle under the springs will give you about 2 inch lift, and also give you heaps of flex, but if you want to get some awesome flex, take out the leaves and put in some coils lol.

well, i hope this helps

Hilux already has the springs over the diff. Longer shackles and/or lift springs is the cheapest /easiest option for suspension lift

Ok lets clear this up a bit

Im yet to see a beam axle 106 Hilux with sway bars :?
106 Hiluxs already have the diffs under the leaves.
If you take out too many leaves the truck will sag and will also suffer axle tramp and promptly make your leaves resemble the letter S. Chances are that if it has after market leaves you'll probably get away with removing the overload leaves.

What I'd do, assuming you want to spend as little on bits and pieces as possible is.............
*Remove the overload leaves
*Straighten out the clamps on the leaves to allow the leave pack to open up when at full droop.
*Check the lengths of your shocks, make sure they arn't fully extended to early.
*Check length of brake hoses, make sure they arn't being stretched at full droop.

If I have some money to spend I'd do....

*X over high steer (see Suzolla, he'll sort you quick as)
*Remove the torque rod on the front diff. (only if you do the above mod  )
*Rears up front.
*Kzn165 Hilux rear leaves. You'll have to fab up some new hangers and shackles but if you do the RUF 1st then you can adjust hanger and shackle mounts to suit the desired height. Falcon leaves are all good for flex but are wider, so as well as having to sort hangers and shackle you'd have to sort u bolts and plates. 165 leaves are the same width as 106.
*10" Ranchos front and rear. 9 stage adjustable, best of both worlds

Hope this helps

I am an idiot!
I meant to say it WONT increase ground clearnce under the gearbox, but it will make space for bigger tyres......

Just a small brain fart....
Some might say that started when I bought my first Jeep...
