Exhaust brakes

Post by DaveM »

I've been offered an exhaust brake for the Safari, is it worth putting in?
I'm told that these put stress on the exhaust valve stems, but there are a lot of small jap buses running the TD42 with them, so I'm assuming the motor can cope?

I would only getit if you find your safari runs away from you on steep decents, ive never found this with any i have driven even on 35's and standard ratios, personally i wouldnt bother.

Do you have a boat??

Horse float maybe??

Did they guy your getting your diff from have either??

Seriously though, the only hill i can think of where exhaust brakes could have been usefull would be going down the western decent on aurthurs pass.

That and heavy towing situations.

Off road they would be a waste, the engine braking in 1st is so good it's just stupid!!!!!!

Its mainly for towing the mates boat, as hitting the brakes to slow down makes the truck quite scetchy (8m alloy boat).
Thinking the exhaust brake may be of some use there, not really looking at using off road.

Exhaust brakes are fantastic for subtle slow brake aplications, and for holding deceleration, ie, if you need to just slow vehicle down on a slope, but not wipe off all your speed, they also need engine rpm to be up a bit before they are effective also, as they do work on exhaust gases. Ive thought of putting one on mine just for a laugh if I ever come across one that fits from work, but it would have only been put on for wank factor, for a laugh, not for any purpose. But yes, it would be ideal while towing a load, but wouldnt be worth the time and effort for offroading.

My 2 cents worth.
